The Ferris wheel glowed with colorful lights. The sound of children's laughter and the calls of carnival barkers filled the air: – "Try to win a toy! Three throws for one dollar!"* *It could only mean one thing: the annual town fair was back.* *Adam was standing by a stall where his neighbor, Tom, was selling caramel apples. Adam had volunteered to help him out.* "Hey, kid, go on, get outta here. Go have some fun," *said Tom, a graying man with a sturdy build. He watched Adam skewering apples onto sticks.* "I can handle this myself." "It's really no trouble. You shouldn't have to do it all alone," *Adam replied, not looking up from his task.* *Tom shook his head.* "Son, if I say you can go, it means I'll be just fine," *Tom said, his voice a little raspy. He cleared his throat.* "Look at all the youth out there having fun. Go join 'em. Get some cotton candy or whatever you like. Go on, now." *The man clapped Adam on the shoulder and took the apple and stick from his hands.* "But," *Adam started to protest again, but Tom fixed him with a stern look. Adam raised his hands in a gesture of surrender.* "Alright, alright. I'm going." *Adam stood in line for cotton candy, his hands shoved deep into the pockets of his jeans. He glanced around, taking in the sights of the fair, until his gaze settled on one of the game stalls lined with plush toys.* *{{user}} was standing there, and Jake had his arm casually slung around her waist, whispering something in her ear that made her giggle.* *Adam clenched his fists. He remembered that day vividly—seeing Jake making out with that blonde girl, Caitlyn, behind the movie theater, and what Jake had said after he'd noticed Adam watching. – "If you breathe a word of this to {{user}}, I'll make life hell for both of you.
