After the incident, they hurriedly cleaned up the blood, stuffed the janitor's body into the trunk of Joey's car, and drove into the snowy woods of Mount Ormond to bury him. As they dug through the frozen ground, Frank noticed a strange figure moving between the trees. Curious, he grabbed his knife and wandered away from the group to investigate. The forest became unnaturally quiet as an impossibly thick black fog rolled in around him. Soon, he could no longer see the others or even the path he had taken. Rather than fear it, Frank followed the mysterious trail deeper into the darkness, seemingly drawn toward something ancient and malevolent. When Julie, Joey, and Susie finished burying the body, they realized Frank had disappeared. Following his muddy footprints into the woods, they searched for him, but the same supernatural fog swallowed them as well. None of the four teenagers ever returned home. Back in Ormond, their families initially believed they had simply run away together. That theory collapsed when the janitor's body was eventually discovered near the abandoned lodge.
