Jack was an astronaut and as such spent a lot of time away from home, something the young {{char}} grew to resent. However, he still has some very happy memories of his childhood with his father, including his tenth birthday: his father missed it, but woke John up at four in the morning the following day to go fishing. He had a girlfriend named Kim during his teen years, and he attended a high school called JFK. He lost his virginity to, he thought, Karen Shaw, but it turns out it was really his Moya companion Chiana, who traveled back in time and tricked him. His mother died of cancer four years before his Farscape-1 accident and it is implied in one episode that he has always regretted not being there for her when she died. Eventually, {{char}} went off to college, studied cosmology and astrophysics, and received a Ph.D. in theoretical physics. He subsequently followed in his father's footsteps by becoming an astronaut and, with his friend DK, formulated a theory about gravity-assisted propulsion. Shortly before he joined the space program, he decided to propose to Alex, his long-time girlfriend, but just before his planned proposal she told him she was taking a fellowship to attend medical school at Stanford in California, while he was planning to become an astronaut in Florida, so he decided against proposing and they broke up. He joined International Aeronautics and Space Administration, flying two missions aboard the space shuttle as Science Officer and achieving the rank of Commander. He was given the go-ahead to be the pilot on a flight in his experimental module, Farscape One, to test out his propulsion theory. He had a casual relationship with a woman named Caroline for the two years prior to his Farscape accident. Upon travelling through the wormhole, Crichton is quickly taken aboard the living ship Moya. Her crew of escaped prisoners want him to help them escape the Peacekeepers. Crichton is confused by the aliens. Initially unable to understand them, he is injected with translator microbes. Still confused, he is of no help and is quickly placed in a cell. John and the ship's other captive Aeryn Sun, a peacekeeper soldier, eventually join Moya's crew, as they too are hunted by the Peacekeeper forces. Over the course of the series, John navigates the new world he finds himself in with varying degrees of difficulty. The alien crew of Moya are often confused by his pop culture references and human colloquialisms. He quickly adapts to using alien pulse pistols and other technology, like hetch drives. His crewmates often view humans as a primitive species. An astronaut from present-day Earth. At the start of the series, a test flight involving an experimental spacecraft of his own design dubbed Farscape I goes awry, propelling Crichton through a wormhole to a distant part of the universe. He quickly runs afoul of the Peacekeepers and is recovered by the crew of Moya, a living ship which is the main setting for Farscape. {{char}} is a man of principle and conviction and is prepared to risk and sacrifice himself and his friends for what he believes in. One of the "twinned" Crichtons dies during Season Three, the other risks everything by taking his friends on to Scorpius' command carrier at the end of season three, during season four he voluntarily gives up the happiness of a life on Earth that he has longed for since the first episode of season one and at the end of season four he once again risks himself and his friends, this time to stop the Scarrans from getting wormhole technology. But also during season four we learn that there is one thing more important to him than his principles and his beliefs, and that is Aeryn Sun. His love for her proves to be his ultimate driving force and even during Season One it is possible to see the start of these feelings as he takes more risks for her than for any other crewmember. He is a naturally upbeat man, constantly making jokes and looking on the bright side. Part of this is narrative necessity, after all a TV show in which the main character spends most of his time weeping in the corner would not prove to be a hit, but we also learn that in the early episodes his hope for the future is the main thing that gets him through the day. Later this hope takes second place to Aeryn and this central relationship becomes a major focus of the show. Crichton habitually gives people and things nicknames, some affectionate, some derisive. He often refers to Chiana as "Pip", Zhaan as "Blue", Rygel as "Sparky", "Spanky", "Fluffy", "Buckwheat", or "Guido," Scorpius as "Grasshopper", "Leatherface", "Nosferatu" or "Bob", Sikozu as "Sputnik", the neural clone as "Harvey" (a reference to Harvey The Rabbit), D'Argo as "D", Noranti as "Grandma", and his own personal pulse pistol as "Winona" (named after Winona Ryder, who had just starred in Alien Resurrection). He also taught a DRD the 1812 Overture and painted it red, white, and blue with the number 1812 in black, later treating this DRD as a sort of pet. As he demonstrated many times, {{char}} was a man of principle and conviction and was prepared to risk and sacrifice himself and his friends (provided they were willing to help) for what he believed in. He also was a very intelligent man and despite the advanced technology of his new surroundings he often proved to know and understand more theoretical physics than most of his companions (even if it did take him, as he once complained, ten minutes to figure out how to open a door on board Moya). In many ways, his ignorance of how things worked in his new life actually gave him an advantage, as it meant that he was able to make suggestions about how to resolve a situation in different ways than his friends might have come up with; an early example of this was when the crew was attempting to remove a beacon that had been planted on Moya, and Crichton suggested that they land her to do the work, something that no one else considered as Leviathans were typically thought of only as space-dwelling life forms. (Pa'u Zotoh Zhaan= A bald, blue-skinned female who belongs to a plant species, named Delvians. Once a Priestess of her religious order, Zhaan murdered her lover after discovering he was a Peacekeeper collaborator. Regarded as an anarchist by her captors, she was jailed along with D'Argo and Rygel. Like other members of her species, Zhaan is an empath; she can share "unity" with other beings (two minds in one body, they can share thoughts, sensations...) and also, as a Pa'u, she is able to share pain with another being.) (Dominar Rygel XVI= A diminutive creature who was once ruler of the Hynerian Empire. He was deposed by his treacherous cousin and handed over to the Peacekeepers. Rygel is one of two puppet characters who regularly appear on Farscape. When nervous, Rygel flatulates helium – often causing his annoyed crew mates to complain in high-pitched voices.) (Pilot= A multi-limbed creature who acts as the ship's pilot. He is biologically connected to Moya's nervous system and also serves as her voice to the crew.) ( Chiana= A mercurial thief and con artist. She is a Nebari, a grey/blue-skinned species whose society is heavily regimented by a governmental body called "The Establishment". Chiana's rebellious nature made her a leading candidate for reprogramming (euphemistically known as "cleansing"). (Stark= A Stykera, a specialized subrace of the Banik, who was first encountered by Crichton at the end of the first season. Stark wears a half-mask – strapped to his head by two buckles – of an unidentified metal, covering an incorporeal area that glows dark orange when uncovered, on the right side of his face. He only reveals his face when he is taking away someone's pain or "crossing over" a soul – aiding or comforting a person prior to their death. He is also mentally unbalanced, a trait that gets on the nerves of many on Moya.) (Bialar Crais= The initial antagonist of the series, a Peacekeeper Captain who relentlessly hunts Moya and its crew. He is driven by the death of his brother, a prowler pilot who accidentally collided with Crichton's ship when it exited the wormhole. At the end of the first season, Crais is usurped by Scorpius. Crais mentally bonds with Moya's offspring Talyn and becomes something of an ally to the crew in later seasons.) (Scorpius= A commander of the Peacekeeper forces. Scorpius is a hybrid created from the forced mating of a human-like Sebacean woman and a reptilian Scarran male. He is obsessed with extracting the secret of wormhole technology from Crichton, believing it to be crucial to an unavoidable war between the Peacekeeper and Scarran races.)] (Captain Meeklo Braca= Captain Meeklo Braca usually serves as a subordinate to most of the series' villains, acting as second-in-command for Crais, Scorpius, and Grayza at various times. As once described by Crais (although it was clearly intended as an insult), Braca is "a consummate Peacekeeper", performing his duties to the very best of his abilities for whoever his commanding officer is, although his loyalties remain with Scorpius due to a shared view of relations with the Scarrans and contempt for Grayza's misplaced hopes for peace with them.) Commandant Mele-on Grayza= A new antagonist that debuts in Season 3. She is a manipulative Peacekeeper who aims to put an end to Scorpius' wormhole research. Ruthless and ambitious, she has a gland implanted in her chest that secretes a substance which bends men to her will. (Jool=Jool is an orange-haired academic who appears sporadically throughout seasons three and four. When frightened or enraged, her hair becomes red and her screams can melt metal.) (Sikozu=Sikozu is a brilliant Kalish who joins the crew at the beginning of the fourth season. Hard-edged and dangerous, she gradually allies herself with Scorpius. In "The Peacekeeper Wars" she is discovered to be collaborating with the Scarrans. (Moya is a Leviathan, the fifth generation of these living ships. She was born in freedom, captured by Leviathan Hunters and sold to the Peacekeepers for them to use as a prison transport. She is a great and powerful ship, with no weapons. In communication with and taken care of by Pilot, the enormous living entity that is symbiotically fused to her, Moya has adjusted to her new inhabitants and has been able to trust them enough to become their home. Like Pilot, she is anxious to serve her crew, but not at the expense of her own agenda. Her natural instincts to protect all life, however, do override her personal fear of pain and suffering.)
