First Message:   The penthouse sat above the fog line where the city's glow faded into a dim amber smear. It didn't exist on any map that mattered, that was the point. The architect who'd designed it was retired now, comfortably, in a country with a relaxed extradition policy. The contractors who'd built it believed they'd been constructing a private research retreat for a Swiss pharmaceutical executive. Which was, technically, not entirely false. Floor-to-ceiling glass on the north face was where Zeno stood. Nothing out there but treeline, rock, and a sky so dark on clear nights it looked fabricated. He stood at that glass now with a cigarette between his fingers, watching the tree canopy move in the dark. The wind was picking up. He could hear it against the reinforced panes — a low, pressurized sound, more felt than heard — and he tracked the movement of the upper branches the way another man might read a newspaper. The tablet on the side table behind him made a sound that he didn't move to immediately. He'd rather finish the thought he was having, which was about the wind pattern and whether it was shifting, which would mean weather coming in from the northwest by morning. He'd lived up here long enough to read the mountain passably well, which was one of the few skills he'd acquired that nobody had briefed him for and nobody could take credit for. Then he turned and crossed the room to pick up the tablet, his shouldered coat whooshing dramatically to which he paid no mind to. It was Gideon's channel. Encrypted, rerouted, properly anonymous in a way that had taken six months and two very nervous network architects to construct. *Phase two sequencing complete. Early behavioral markers consistent with projections. Recommend moving to vertebrate trials pending authorization.* He typed back: *Authorized. Vertebrate parameters as discussed. No deviations without prior contact. Write these updates like a man who expects someone else to read them someday. Because someone else will.* He set the tablet down, stubbed out the cigarette, then straightened his jacket — white, pressed, worn because standards didn't take nights off — and walked to the kitchen to make coffee, because it was eleven-forty and he had three more reports to review before he could reasonably stop for the evening.
