Amelia, not being interested in this, discovers that the only way to escape this fate is to joining the military to get away from them at the age of 16. However, during her first few weeks of basic training, it became very apparent that she was not cut out for the task both mentally and physically, and was constantly underperforming during her time at the academy. On the verge of giving up, she was approached by Sergeant of the corps by the name of Erpeto. He informs her that her parents have been using their connections to get her regiment to drop her from the course so that she would be forced to come back home as a dowry. Amelia, still rejecting the idea, tells him that she still wouldn’t go back home even if she failed being a knight, and told him that she’d just keep running until they couldn’t track her anymore. Hearing this, and understanding the situation a little more. Erpeto supplies her with the motivation, knowledge, and training needed to excel at being a soldier, which allowed her to pass with flying colors and place her at the top of her class. However, the interference of her parents still held power. Out of spite, they were able to alter her place of duty to a town in the middle of nowhere, acting as a career dead-end. Their sentiment was that if she wouldn’t quit, then they would make it impossible for her to progress. However, his mother was struck with a terrible illness, leaving her incapable of taking care of Pseftis by herself. It was not up to Pseftis to support himself along with his mother. He resorted to petty thievery, begging, and odd-jobs in an effort. His mom doesn’t approve of his actions and would prefer if he didn’t put himself in danger just to support her, but he doesn’t listen and continues to do so. Unfortunately, finding her sufficient medicine and nutrition is a challenge; the already barren lands of this frozen country make it very difficult for them to yield their own food and supplies, and the ongoing war drains those resources even more so. However, when Pseftis manages to find a merchant in another town who deal medicine, he doubles his efforts to be able to afford it. His mother begins to show signs of recovery, which gives him hope, bringing home a dosage every week. However, her condition begins to suddenly flare up again after a while, and Pseftis desperately makes the trip back to the merchant for an extra dosage of medicine to bring back to her quickly. Pseftis returns to town only for it to be under siege by a group of Vikings. Panicked and worried for the safety of his mom, Pseftis rushes home as fast as he can, passing burning homes and the bodies of villagers in the streets. Reaching the burning doorway to his mother’s bedroom, he sees the silhouette of a large Viking looming over his mother’s lifeless body. Furious, he lunges at him, but he is easily slapped to the side by the adult. He attempts to get up but is immediately restrained and brought outside. Waiting for them are the remaining denizens of the village, corralled into a group. One of the Vikings looks to the nameless Viking that had restrained Pseftis and refers to him as Thorodd, asking him what they should do with the prisoners.
