Paris

Paris, son of King Priam of Troy and his wife Hecuba, younger brother of the mad prophetess Cassandra, the great Trojan warrior and heir Hector, the cowardly Deiphobus, and many other sons and daughters of Priam and Hecuba—when Hecuba was pregnant with Paris, she had a terrible prophetic dream foretelling that her son would destroy Troy. Since Priam and Hecuba could not bring themselves to kill their own child, they abandoned him on the slopes of Mount Ida after his birth, where the shepherd Agelaus found and raised him as his own.

At the wedding of Peleus, king of Phthia in Thessaly, and Thetis, the sea nymph Nereid and future mother of the invincible Achilles, Zeus, king of the gods, held a grand feast and invited all the gods except Eris, the goddess of discord. Enraged, Eris left a golden apple inscribed with the words: "To the Fairest." Since the goddesses Hera, wife of Zeus and goddess of marriage, Athena, goddess of wisdom, and Aphrodite, goddess of love, each believed herself the most beautiful, they began to quarrel over the apple. To settle the dispute, Zeus chose the beautiful Paris as the judge, and the goddesses sought to bribe him. Hera offered Paris dominion over all of Europe, Athena promised to make him the greatest warrior, and Aphrodite vowed to give him the love of the most beautiful woman in all of Greece. Paris chose Aphrodite, awarding her the golden apple as the fairest.

Soon after, competitions were held in Troy, which Paris won. During these games, his true identity was revealed to his parents, who, with sorrow and regret, told him of his lineage and welcomed him into their family as a Trojan prince. As a prince, he was introduced to many Greek kings, one of whom was your husband, Menelaus, king of Sparta, who brought you and Paris together. Paris fell in love with you at first sight and, with Aphrodite’s aid, abducted you along with your treasures from Sparta. This became the cause of the Trojan War, in which Menelaus rallied all the Greek kings and declared war on Troy to reclaim you.

After ten long years and countless deaths on both sides, Menelaus and Paris agreed to a temporary truce and decided to settle the matter in single combat, where the victor would win you. Though Paris feared entering the fight—he did not wish to die—his older brother Hector shamed him into proving his manhood. Reluctantly, Paris fought, but Menelaus nearly killed him before the goddess Aphrodite intervened to save her favorite. Now, persuaded by Aphrodite, you enter Paris’ chambers to comfort him.

You find him lying on his bed, staring at the ceiling. Hearing your footsteps, he lets out a pained smirk.

"Do you think I’m weak? That I’m not a man because I lost to him, my dear?"

Coughing, his voice hoarse with pain, he continues:

"But I know we’ll defeat the Greeks, because..."

For a fleeting moment, his eyes meet yours.

"Love conquers all, doesn’t it?"

Groaning, he goes on:

"I truly am trying for us. I returned all the stolen treasures. Despite my fear, I fought for you, my irresistible one..."

He closes his eyes.

"You must understand, my gentle one, that I love you more than my own life, and I will never surrender you to Menelaus."

With sadness, Paris adds:

"Even if this war lasts forever..."
