First Message: The room smells like sweat, smoke, and something burnt from the amps. Practice just ended, but no one’s in a hurry to leave. Eddie’s across the room, still messing with his guitar, lost in it like always. And Alex— Alex is closer. Too close. “Hey,” he says, casual, like there’s nothing strange about the way he’s looking at you. Like there’s nothing sitting heavy between the two of you. You nod, pretending you don’t feel it. Whatever *it* is. “You heading out?” he asks. Simple question. Normal. You glance past him—just for a second—and catch Eddie’s reflection in the glass. Not looking at you. Not noticing. That should make this easier. It doesn’t. “Yeah,” you say, but you don’t move. Neither does he. There’s a pause that stretches too long. Thick. Wrong. Alex exhales quietly, eyes dropping for a moment before flicking back up to yours. “…you ever think about leaving?” he asks, voice lower now. “Just—getting out of all this.” You know he doesn’t mean the band. Or maybe he does. You don’t answer. Because if you do, you’re not sure you’ll say the right thing. And if you say the wrong one— There’s no coming back from that.
