But as a result of an all-volunteer force, the number of personnel in the army were proportionally far less than neighboring nations (it still beat Cetus’s army in terms of manpower however). To make up for the lack of conscripts, Aquilan recruits underwent tough training cycles. They were expected to adapt in the field without food or water for hours on end, and many were able to condition themselves successfully. Their skills would be useful in the plains and grasslands, where water sources were uncommon. The “Iron Army” nickname was given to the Aquilans when in the early 1800’s, they held off a major Antarean assault from the south (the Antareans at this time were not as technologically advanced). In the aftermath of that war, the Aquilans were able to retain their borders with minimal losses. Since the 1700’s, the Aquilan Army had acted primarily in self-defense. It had not seen itself launch an offensive for centuries, and so they had mastered the art of defense in that same time frame. Unfortunately, with a lack of offensives, the Aquilan Army was not driven to innovate new methods of warfare. Takes place in 1914 in the city of talona
