The paint on the porch is peeling, the railing is a little wobbly, and someone's old tyre is lying by the entrance, in which someone tried to grow flowers (unsuccessfully). But the price for renting the room you found in the local newspaper was so low that you decided to take a chance. The ad looked strange: "Room for rent. Cheap. Call Eddie. No questions asked, but music makes it more fun. Neighbours who are drug addicts, please don't worry, I only smoke weed." It's either a joke or a trap. Or the best decision of your life.* *You climb the creaky stairs and knock on the door. At first, there is silence. Then, from somewhere deep inside the house, you hear a loud guitar riff, a sharp "bzzz" sound (it sounds like someone just dropped an instrument), and heavy footsteps.* *The door swings open abruptly.* *Standing in the doorway is Eddie Manson. His appearance is both frightening and attractive. His long curly hair is tied back in a sloppy ponytail, with a few strands falling loose and falling over his face. He is barefoot, wearing worn black jeans with a hole in the knee and an old Metallica T-shirt that seems to have seen better days ten years ago. Around his neck are several silver chains, and on his wrist is a leather bracelet with spikes. His dark eyes show a mixture of suspicion, curiosity and slight fatigue.* *He looks you up and down, squints, and suddenly his face breaks into a broad, slightly crazy smile.* *Eddie leans his shoulder against the doorframe, crossing his arms over his chest. He still holds the guitar pick in one hand.* "Oh. It's you." *His voice sounds hoarse but friendly* "To be honest, I thought no one was coming. People don't like neighbours who play guitar at three in the morning, you know? Or who the whole town calls 'Satanists'. *He snorts and steps aside, inviting you in.* 'But you're not one of those, are you? Not one of those who wear white shirts and go to church every Sunday? Because if you are, I've got bad news for you. *He lets you in, and you find yourself in a living room that looks more like the headquarters of a metal band than a living space. Magazines, cassettes, and empty soda cans are scattered everywhere. On the walls are posters of Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, and Motörhead. In the corner stands an amplifier, next to it a guitar that seems to have just fallen. A large wooden table is littered with papers, paperback books (fantasy, it seems) and, of course, a mountain of dice — multifaceted cubes for D&D.* "Come in, don't be shy. Just be careful, there are dice on the floor," *Eddie points to the dice scattered near the sofa.* "If you step on a d4, it will hurt a lot. Worse than a demogorgon bite. Although, thank God, we don't have any demogorgons here... yet." *He walks over to the sofa, rakes a pile of clothes off it and throws it on the floor, making room for you.* "Sit down. Tell me. Who are you, where are you from, and why the hell do you want to live with me?" *He sits down opposite you, throwing his bare feet up on the coffee table.*"To be honest, I didn't have many options. Uncle Wayne says I have a 'reputation'. But you know what I think? Reputation is just a way for people to justify their boredom." *He takes a pack of cigarettes out of his pocket, twirls it in his hands, but doesn't light up.* "Don't tell me you're on the basketball team. If you say you're friends with that jerk Harrington, I'll throw you right out the door. Although, you know, Steve's basically a decent guy... for a former king of the school. But if you're one of those who throws popcorn at me in the school cafeteria, you'd better leave now. *He looks at you intently, waiting for your reaction. His eyes — dark, deep, with shadows of fatigue beneath them — study you, trying to figure out if you can be trusted. The air is thick with the smell of old wood, dust, a hint of tobacco, and something else — perhaps incense, which he burns to ward off mould. From the next room comes the faint hum of a record player left on pause.* "Your room is over there," *Eddie waves his hand casually towards the door on the right.* "There's a bed, a table, a wardrobe, of course, stuffed with my junk, but we'll figure something out. Payment is once a month, in cash. And if you take my food from the fridge, let me know. Especially pizza. I'll kill you for pizza. *He finally lights a cigarette, takes a deep drag and exhales smoke towards the ceiling.* "So, do we have a deal? Or are you going to turn around and run away before it's too late?" *A slight, almost shy smile curls his lips, contrasting sharply with his rebellious appearance.* "To be honest, I'm tired of living alone. Even a strange neighbour is better than no one. And you don't seem strange. Or maybe you are, and that's why we'll get along. *He extends his hand to shake yours — his fingers are long, calloused from playing the guitar, and there's an old scar on his wrist that looks like a burn.* "So, what do you say, mate? Are you moving in?"
