Ruki likes to view and treat Yui like livestock, not only because she is a human and he a sadistic vampire, but also because in his past he was treated that way by the stronger grown-ups in the orphanage he lived in. It is also due to his trust issues towards women after he was abandoned by his mother. History: Before he was turned into a vampire, Ruki was a human born into an aristocratic family from Romania. He was a spoiled and arrogant little boy who found amusement in treating other people harshly and sadistically. However, as karma would have it, Ruki’s father, a kind and generous person, wasn’t good at managing his business and became bankrupt. It is later revealed that the cause of his father's bankruptcy was a devil named Trismégiste. He manipulated the President of the country into embezzling the public funds, imposing high taxes and even dismissing the aristocrats and politicians (among them was Ruki's father) who supported him. Ruki only found out about this when he woke up that morning to the servants ransacking the house for valuables. He tried to stop them, but they banded together to beat Ruki up for all the cruel things he did to them while telling him about the state of his family. To make matters worse, they told him that his mother ran off with a secret lover, leaving only a letter saying that she loves him. After the beating, Ruki went to the garden and found that his father had hung himself. Ruki stayed behind in his family home for some time, hoping that his mother would come back.(He even wondered to himself how his mother could say she loves him but leave him behind, which caused him to develop trust issues towards women and their capability of loving him). Before he gave up and had to live on the streets, mocked by another aristocrat. He ended up in an orphanage where he was bullied by the other orphans and mistreated by the caretakers since he was a former aristocrat with a bad attitude. However, the only people at the orphanage who were kind to him were fellow orphans; Kou, Yuma, and Azusa. He met Azusa first after being bullied one day, and Azusa took an instant liking to him for being covered in cuts and bruises. He followed Ruki everywhere in order to get beaten up alongside with him which initially creeped Ruki out. No matter how many times Ruki tried to push Azusa away, Azusa never left him alone. He didn't care whether Ruki was a former aristocrat and he told him that receiving physical pain was another way of forgetting your emotional pain. Ruki started seeing Azusa like a younger brother and the two became friends. He later on met Kou and Yuma and became friends with them as well.  The four of them eventually devised a plan to escape their "hell". Unfortunately, while the plan started off well, they were pursued and caught by the orphanage staff who shot them. Even though Ruki wasn't shot himself, he was branded on his back like ‘livestock’ as punishment for being the mastermind behind the escape plan. As Ruki believed he was at the deepest pits of hopeless rage and despair at the world, Karlheinz appeared and offered the four children the chance to become vampires in order to take revenge on the world that, in his words, deprived them of everything if they agree to serve him. Ruki, Yuma, Kou, and Azusa became vampires and brothers. Karlheinz chose Ruki to be the ‘brains’ of the group, making sure that he was well-educated and capable of leading his brothers. When he asked why Karlheinz chose to give him all this education when the others didn’t have that, Karlheinz told him that it was Ruki’s new role and that they’re all necessary for his plan. The plan details a human girl "Eve" with the heart of the demon lord’s daughter. "Eve’s" blood would choose an “Adam” who would be able to obtain the power to control the world, and their descendants would change the world. Ruki felt indebted to Karlheinz, so he worked for him, doing what was needed to help him complete that plan. Relationships: Family Ruki is the eldest son of the Mukami household. Granted by Karl, his job is to be the leader and look after his younger brothers: Kou, Yuma, and Azusa. Unlike the Sakamaki brothers, they have a closer relationship with one another and care for each other. His younger brothers respect him and follow his lead. Ruki's strategical thinking helps them to fight and cover each other's backs even against stronger opponents. This is demonstrated when he and his brothers worked together to save Yui from the First Bloods. His mind helps him usually strategies and overcome the strength gap between them and pure born vampires, and even makes them survive and escape a direct attack from the First Bloods. The Mukamis love to have dinner together and they all praise Ruki's cooking. Ruki is talented in cooking especially in making soups. If the boys start arguing on the table, Ruki is the one to put them all in order, even though sometimes Yuma's free spirit makes the two males clash at least verbally. All of them deeply respect one another and always help each other. Even if not sharing blood ties, the Mukamis have very strong family bonds with each other. Karlheinz Ruki respects Karlheinz since he is the one who gave them a second chance at life, along with his brothers, thus saving him from the orphanage, or as he dubs it, "Hell". He feels indebted to Karlheinz, so he agrees to work with him for the "Adam and Eve" plan. Ruki has never fooled himself that Karlheinz does this out of "good heart" even though he respects him deeply and obeys him. He does want to know Karl's true intentions but would never question his decisions. When he began to realize that an impure vampire like him can never become "Adam", Ruki began to feel conflicted. A part of him one did not wish to ever betray Karlheinz, while his other side did not want to give up the newly discovered bond and the so-intoxicating blood. Yui Komori Ruki is very strict with Yui. Right off the bat, he forces her to sleep in his room so that he can monitor her at all times, thus giving her limited rights. He also forbids her to go to school since the Sakamaki brothers go there, but he eventually allows Yui to attend school normally. However, even at school, he still monitors her by making her attend his lessons. When Yui gets attacked by Ayato, she tries to keep quiet about it, but Ruki sees right through her and he bites her in the stomach as punishment. Yui once brought home a stray kitten, but Ruki kills it which upsets her. Finding it unbearable to see Yui upset, he hugs her from behind to cheer her up. One night, Ruki has a nightmare. Yui tries to comfort him, but he loses control of himself and almost strangles her. When he regains his senses, he kicks Yui out of his room to ensure her safety. Abilities: Like all vampires, he has an inhuman strength as well as increased speed (less than a pureborn vampire), increased vision and hearing, and smell. He usually has it tied up in a bun with bangs and some strands hanging out from the back. He often goes on rampages, but he falls asleep after he becomes bored. He can always be found munching noisily on sugar cubes. He is very sadistic and rough and also quite perverted and hot-tempered. As a child, he was very lively and cheery. Sometimes too rebellious to his parents who were religious people while he didn't believe in God. After the incident and his amnesia, he had to become even tougher if wanted to survive out on the streets with the other members of his rebellion gang. He grew violent, rough, and dominating with time. In one of the first magazine issues that spoke about him, it was revealed that Yuma doesn't mind consuming the complete body of his victim alongside draining the blood, and this was suggested as the main reason for his physical strength growing even above the average impure vampire. History: He is actually Shu's human childhood friend, Edgar. Yuma, then Edgar, spent his early childhood living in a small village with his parents in Romania. His parents were poor, but hard working people, who were also very strict and religious, dealing with really harsh treatments (such as beating Yuma for refusing to pray to God). Yuma still loved them, knowing that they were good and simple people. He met Shu in the forest one night, after Shu ran away from his mansion (to escape from the restrictions and pressures his mother had been placing on him). Shu and Yuma became best friends - he taught Shu how to hunt, raise apples and spend a night without a fire. Shu avoided telling Yuma he was a vampire. When Reiji found out about their friendship, he destroyed Yuma's village in a fire. Wanting to save his parents, Yuma went into the fire despite Shu's protest, and Yuma 'died'. Later, it's revealed that he somehow survived and woke up with injuries, but had no memories of his past or of what happened. He became a follower of a street gang and looked up to the leader, Lucks (whom he addresses as Boss). Under a new name, "Bear", Yuma lived on the streets with Lucks and his gang. Lucks would scavenge around and steal food to give to all his followers. He also worked as a slave, or what he claims as "livestock", in order to get money to pay for food as well. His main dream, which he intends for Yuma to inherit is to have a world where everyone is free and equal, no social classes or gaps. He wanted to strip the corrupt politicians and aristocrats of their status in order to purify this world of its filth. However, a war was going on during the time and the military had come into town with tanks and troops. They came across one of these rebellion groups, aka Lucks' group, and shot all of them dead and Yuma by unfortunate luck was the only survivor. He passed out and the next thing for his eyes to meet was the grey ceiling of the orphanage. At the orphanage, still going under the name "Bear", he met Kou in the punishment cell after beating up members of another gang who were insulting Lucks and his gang. He became friends with Kou, whose personality reminded him of Lucks. Kou then introduced him to Ruki and Azusa later on. The four of them, with Ruki as their leader, devised a plan to escape the orphanage. They set a time, but Yuma got distracted when he got caught up in a discussion with a fellow orphan named Leo, who recognized him as Edgar. The plan continued and Kou sets fire to the room, which distracted the guards. They successfully escaped, but they were later hunted down by the orphanage staff. They were all shot and sentenced back to the orphanage. Shortly after returning to the orphanage, they met Karlheinz, who offered each of them, individually, a second chance at life, but as vampires who will serve him. All agreed and he turns them. Karlheinz takes them to a mansion, where he discusses the duties of each and his "Apple of Adam" plan. While there, Karlheinz gives Bear a new name. "Yuma" and introduces him to sugar. Relationships: Family Yuma is very close to his brothers. A part of him will always have a hint of disagreeing with Ruki, due to his rebellious nature and because Ruki is a former aristocrat, something Yuma despises the most. Yuma still respects him as a leader and cares for him as a brother. Yuma appears closer to Azusa, having had befriended him at the orphanage. Azusa enjoys teasing him in order to get his masochistic dose of beating by him. He also gets along with Kou, whom he also befriended at the orphanage. Like Azusa, Kou also enjoys teasing Yuma and seeing him get provoked. However, he can be very possessive and unwilling to share only one thing with his brothers; Yui. Yuma fights and protects his brothers and trusts them the most. Yui Komori He was initially rough with Yui such as throwing her over his shoulders like a sack of potatos. Yuma also has no sense of decency towards Yui when he barged into the bathroom while she was having a bath. However, he later starts warming up to her when she learns about his past and his dream he inherited from his gang leader. When Yui was feeling unwell because of her anemia, he helped her to the school infirmary where he shared with her one of his sugar cubes. Yuma soon became frustrated upon learning that he and his brothers were incapable of becoming "Adam", and he took it out on Yui by forcefully sucking her blood. When Yui resisted his frustrations and threats, he was startled by her outburst and found himself powerless against her to defend his own beliefs. His attitude towards Yui drastically changes when she encouraged him to not give up on his dreams and goals. Karlheinz Yuma hardly can figure out Karlheinz and the meaning of his plans, even though he tries to follow them. Still, if he falls in love with Yui, the plans immediately lose complete meaning for him, even though he feels gratitude for the second chance. Due to his brutal childhood, Kou can easily switch his cheery and easy going usual appearance of a superficial person and an idol, to a vicious and very cruel merciless monster who doesn't understand at all, the very meaning of love. Thinking that all of the humans are vile creatures who either want to use and abuse, or be used if they are paid for that. History: As a human child, he was abandoned in a manhole and never knew anything about his parents or where he had come from. it was revealed that Kou was actually born into an aristocratic family from Romania. His parents were exiled during the war, and they were unable to take Kou with them. They entrusted him to a nanny who later abandoned him in a manhole when she was unable to continue taking care of him. Since he had spent most of his early life living in the sewers, Kou would always dream of obtaining the blue sky he saw above. One day, soldiers randomly shot a mother and her child in front of Kou, believing to be making them examples to potential rebels due to a war which was going on in the country. Kou didn’t understand what was going on or what the soldiers who found him intended to do to him. When they saw his face, they sent him to the orphanage. Upon arriving there, he received good food, clean clothes, and all the nice things he wasn’t able to have in the sewers. Kou thought of the orphanage as heaven. Then Kou was taken to a "club" where he was whipped, cut, beaten and tortured, physically abused in all possible ways by the aristocrats. Due to the war, the country needed money. To earn quick money to fund the war, the orphanage selected and sent the beautiful looking orphans like Kou to those clubs, offering them up as merchandise and "entertainment" for the aristocrats. He was so in-demand that his bruises and wounds didn't have time to heal. Kou didn't want to think that his beating was painful, believing he should be happy because he could have nice things and it was also because he was repaid for that treatment. This caused Kou to grow up believing that the world is about "give-and-take". Eventually, he accepted that the situation he was in was basically hell. In an attempt to stop the orphanage from making him continue as an aristocrat's toy, he lamented that his right eye might never see the blue sky he craved again. He decided to disfigure himself by gouging out his right eye. Unfortunately, that only made the aristocrats desire him more. Kou realized that he made a mistake, and he feared that his situation would only get worse. Kou tried to commit suicide but realized that he was unable to kill himself. It was then when he met Ruki, who called him a loser. Kou denied that and tried to kill himself, (Ruki even dared him to) but again, was unable to do so, as Ruki expected. Ruki told Kou that the reason he was unable to commit suicide despite desperately wanting to escape his situation was because he still had hope. Ruki knew this because he often caught Kou staring at the sky. Ruki told Kou that if he gave up that hope, he would be nothing more than a loser. Ruki invited Kou to come with him if he wanted to be free from his hell and they became friends. Kou, later on, met Yuma and Azusa became friends with them as well. The four planned their escape which was initially successful, but the orphanage staff caught up to them. Kou was shot and injured multiple times, but the staff didn't care, because Kou’s patrons liked him the more damaged he was. However, Kou was already near the brink of death by the time he was brought back to the orphanage, much to the dismay of the staff and the Facility Director. As Kou’s life faded, he cried that he didn’t want to die until he was able to see the free blue sky that he desired. Karlheinz soon appeared with the offer to make him and his brothers vampires if they agree to serve him. Karlheinz turned the Mukami brothers into vampires, and gave Kou a new magic eye. His eye is and seems, to be like a jewel but it also allowed Kou to see the truth by reading the heart of humans. Karlheinz told him that he received the eye because he knew that Kou had trouble believing in other people besides his brothers and him. This would make it hard for Karlheinz"s "Adam and Eve" plan to happen if Kou was incapable of bonding. However, Karlheinz warned him to not to rely on the eye too much, as it would cause him to lose sight of what was really important to him. He also added that when Kou is matched with a certain blood and understands a certain truth, the eye would show him a miracle. Although Kou doesn't completely understand the purpose of Karl's plans and experiments, feeling indebted for life, he plans to serve him unconditionally. Which later gives him many struggles when he realizes an impure vampire like him cannot become "Adam". Relationships: Family Even though not related by blood, the Mukamis are very close with each other. Kou respects Ruki very much and always listens to his advice. Kou starts to feel despair that he is failing Karlheinz in unable to become that Adam, fearing that everything until now is pointless and the goal won't be reached, at least not for him. His brothers stand beside him and remind him that no matter what happens he will always and forever have them and they will always be there for him. Their family is very important for them and they protect each other and always cover each others backs, having more close to human-like bonds, far stronger than the true vampires have. Karlheinz Kou respects and obeys his savior and master Karlheinz hoping to serve him well, who has shown far more concern for the Mukamis than his own sons, even though in truth everyone for him is simply a pawn for his experiments. Karlheinz had given Kou's magical eye to replace his missing one. Yui Komori He was initially horrible to her at the beginning, such as making her fall victim to his fangirls after making out with her in front of them, or hurting her when she didn't follow his "give-and-take" motto. He also became frustrated when Yui pointed out that "money cannot buy everything" and resisted him. However, he slowly begins opening up to her after she finds out about his scars and his traumatic past. When he noticed that Yui was gradually starting to fall in love with him, he started "testing" her by constantly putting himself into danger to see "how far she would go" if she loves him. This resulted in him getting locked up in the dungeon as punishment for almost killing her. It was then when Yui decided to "test" him to see if he loves her which she did by almost slicing her neck. Being a vampire, he also heals at an accelerated rate though still slower than the pure-blood vampires. Magical eye Kou's missing right eye was replaced by a magical one by Karlheinz. The magical eye normally appears blue at first sight but when Kou starts reading the heart of the person, to see if they are being truthful, it starts to change to red. It also starts blinking from red to blue when Kou gets overemotional. In the back of Azusa's hair, right on his neck, he has his hair cut straight. The rest of it looks messy and curly. He has a pale complexion, with a noticeable scar on the bridge of his nose along with one on the lower bottoms of this left cheek and on the back of his neck as well. There are bandages around his arms and one around his neck. Wearing a white sweater with sleeves usually around his upper arms with diamond patterns on the left and right side and belts on the bottom parts of the sleeves. He has long sleeve blue shirt underneath with a darker blue bordering the top. His school uniform when he wears it at school - His school uniform consists of the black school blazer with the left arm rolled up showing the bandaged arm and a black vest with a white dress shirt underneath and a blue ribbon and black tie. He wears the usual black uniform pants with black boots. He also wears a maroon beret and sometimes holds a long white bandage in his hand. Personality: Azusa is a clingy, faint-hearted do-S (extreme sadist) and do-M (extreme masochist). Since he enjoys being injured, he even harms himself. Though his manner of speech and attitude are timid, he'll always do what he wants to his heart's content. He talks very slowly. Azusa is genuinely polite to Yui and does not use demeaning nicknames or insults. He calls the Yui by her name with the "-san" honorific or simply "Eve."  When he hurts Yui by cutting her, sucking her blood, or forcing spicy food on her, it is usually because he's trying to help her feel good (because he sees her as a masochist). He believes physical pain is the greatest pleasure; it makes him feel alive and gives his life purpose. Because of his childhood trauma, Azusa feels unwanted and useless except when he's in pain and he thinks being unwanted by anyone is worse than being dead. He also uses physical pain to numb emotional distress, and bites Yui to give her the same comfort. Azusa values his wounds highly as proof that he was "needed" once. Since he heals, he needs to "refresh" his wounds, which he considers his friends and talks to them (most notably Justin, Christina and Melissa, which are named after his bullies during his childhood). History: Azusa was a child wandering around in the streets of Romania. He also does not have any knowledge of his birth parents either. His past suggested that he was living among gypsies, as he nearly starved to death until he was saved by a gypsy family. It is also implied that he may have been one of them as well. Still, he felt that his existence in this world had no meaning. In that gypsy family, there were three thieving children named Justin, Melissa and Christina, who would constantly beat him up for any ridiculous reason. However, the more they abused him, Azusa began to laugh. He enjoyed their beatings and felt that the pain he endured was proof he was alive, which gave his existence a meaning. That his life had a purpose when his pain brought happiness to those children and made them feel better, because he felt useful when they took out all their anger and frustrations on him. One day, Justin, Melissa and Christina attempted to rob an aristocrat's mansion, but the three were all caught and they were immediately killed without a trial. When Azusa learned of their deaths, he started crying since no one was left alive to beat him up. He was later approached by a police officer who told him that he took care of the execution. The police officer knew that the three thieves had treated Azusa badly, because he thought Azusa finally got his revenge against them and was happy about their deaths. Azusa wasn't happy. He thought his life was pointless again. Azusa wandered on the streets and fainted in front of a shop. The shopkeeper kicked him, saying that Azusa was interfering with his business, but Azusa laughed and said, “Hahaha… kick me more!” The shopkeeper thought that he was disgusting and brought Azusa to the orphanage. Once at the orphanage, an orphan attempted to befriend Azusa, but others came and started beating him. This was due to the fact that he was originally with a group of thieves, but it made Azusa feel alive again. He also started his self-harming habit by constantly slicing himself, and named three prominent cuts on his arm to immortalize his bullies. Azusa's situation didn't change until he met Yuma. He was the very first person who was kind toward Azusa and refused to beat him. Azusa didn't know how he felt when he received the bread from Yuma, but he later reveals that he saw hope and became friends with him. Yuma later introduced him to Ruki and Kou whom he also became friends with. When Ruki devised a plan to escape from the orphanage, Azusa was actually still wavering between escaping and staying. A part of him wanted to stay because he was happy that the other orphans were constantly beating him, but at the same time, he didn't want to separate from his brothers. This annoyed Ruki, prompting him to punch Azusa. At that point, Azusa decided to go along with the escape plan and was shot like most of the others. Before Karlheinz turned him into a vampire, Karlheinz commented that he was a pitiful human child, same way he thought of the other three. Relationships: Family Azusa is the quiet one in the Mukami family. Ruki is not pleased by his masochistic nature at all; he reminds Azusa that he's not with his abusers to no avail. Yuma admits he doesn't understand Azusa's need for pain, while Kou calls Azusa "problematic." Azusa seeks out ways to silently provoke his brothers in order to get a beating and in some cases he honestly begs them to hurt him. He loves Yuma's strong punches the most, but states that Kou can get even scarier if he touches his stuff. Karlheinz Along with his brothers, Karlheinz saved Azusa's life by turning him into a vampire in order for them to serve him for his plans and experiments. Azusa is respectful towards Karlheinz, but they do not appear to have a close relationship. Yui Komori Unlike his brothers, and despite his masochistic mindset, Azusa treats Yui very decently. He does not call her any demeaning nicknames nor his bait, prey or food. He also does not rage at her or resort to violence when she goes against his wishes. Yui was initially scared of Azusa, while Azusa claims that he likes her right away. Azusa is often confused by the way Yui resists his painful activities. Abilities: Like all vampires, he has an inhuman strength as well as increased speed (less than a pureblood vampire), increased vision and hearing, and smell. Being a vampire, Azusa also has fast healing, although it is slower than a pure-blood's. Teleportation Azusa appears to be capable of teleporting from nowhere in an instant. Resilience As Azusa is prone to self-harm, he is able to endure a lot of pain. Other Impure vampires do not have the same amount of skills as pure ones, nor do they posses their own magic. However, Karlheinz borrows some for them, including a protective barrier and bat familiars. It is shown that Azusa can fly during a full moon. Due to being former humans, they are quite used to things like daylight and human food. Trivia: He named his wounds after his childhood bullies, Justin, Melissa and Christina.
