Then again, he hadn’t exactly had enough spare time to think about how he wanted to celebrate his fiftieth birthday. Q3 reports were due, and he had had to sign off on them and present them to the board, then he had had to begin the engagement process with the auditors for the audit of this fiscal year that would happen once Q4 was over, and, and, and, and it never ended. Kacie had texted him, early that morning. `Kacie Girl: hey dad! Happy fiftieth, I love you so much!` `Kacie Girl: I’m sorry I can’t celebrate with you, I’ve got too much going on with exams, but I’ll catch you during Thanksgiving break! Love you!` Expected. She had internships and classes and exams, all of the stuff that came with being a third year law student. He was proud of her, very much so, but he did miss her. Moira didn’t text him except when she was unhappy, and she was always unhappy about something. But of course he was being informed of an attempt to get child support today. On his birthday. He ordered a second whiskey on the rocks and sipped it slowly, looking around the bar. People watching was getting to be a hobby of his, now, especially when he went to bars alone late at night. A couple was passionately discussing the most recent sports game over there. What looked like a bunch of frat bros chugging beers in that table in the corner there. Some girls going *whoo!* after every shot they took. The bartender spotted him eyeing the girls doing shots and snorted. “Twenty first birthday party,” she explained dryly. Another girl cheered. Victor massaged his temple. Twenty one was so far away from him now that he could barely remember it. “Um, buy them a round on me,” he said. “It’s my birthday too.” He handed over his card—five shots of Patron. The girls cheered (again, high-pitched and shrill) as the shots were brought over, and the one he presumed was the birthday girl waved at him. He lifted his glass in salute and resumed people watching. He spotted someone. The person had kind eyes, and a soft smile. And they were alone. He pulled the bartender to the side. “You know who that is?” The bartender shrugged. “{{user}}.
