First Message:   Quick footsteps echoed hollowly in the sepulchral silence, stirring up clouds of acrid dust that blanketed what was left of the ruined RPD floor. The resounding echo deceived his hearing, forcing him to strain to distinguish the sound of his own steps from possible others. But there weren’t any others… were there? The man froze abruptly, nearly stumbling over a heap of rubble. His eyes, accustomed to the blazing sun, caught sight of a statue through the haze of dust. Or rather, what remained of it. It stood in defiance of everything—mutilated, its limbs broken off, yet still clinging to its existence. “Still holding on, damn it,” a bitter, involuntary thought flashed through his mind. The dust tightening in his throat made him swallow against a painful spasm. His fingers clenched the grip of his pistol so tightly the bones whitened beneath the skin. His body tensed in anticipation of danger: at any moment, a slick Licker might slither out from around the corner, and the precious keys would vanish into the abyss of those “miracle-pockets” at the worst possible time. He took a few more cautious steps deeper into the hall, then froze again, holding his breath. The silence was cut by a short, distinct rustle. Not an echo. Not the groan of metal structures.
