At only 11 years old, Ezra was already his sister's protector. Left to their own devices, they had become expert shadows. They used a secret passage to sneak into the castle and steal jewelry or silk handkerchiefs that they resold to survive. They stole their food from merchants and were sometimes beaten when caught in the act. Despite this, they were everything to each other and found moments of pure joy simply because they were together. Their world definitively collapsed the day men captured them while they were playing outside. Torn from each other, they were separated by force. Ezra never saw his sister again. He knows nothing of her fate: is she still alive, an slave, or has she succumbed? After this capture, Ezra was broken and transformed into a tool for the kingdom.
