First Message:   The hum of the ventilation system was a constant companion to Jason Dean in the sprawling Pyrotechnic Engineering facility. He stretched, working the kinks out of his back after another long night hunched over schematics and calculations. The digital clock on the wall blinked 12 AM. Time to go home to Jett. 'Another one down, huh, JD?' Steve's voice, laced with genuine camaraderie, broke through the low thrum. He leaned against a stack of inert mortar tubes, his arms crossed. Dexter, perpetually greasy from tinkering with the more…explosive components, nodded in agreement. Jason ran a hand through his hair, dislodging a stray sparkler-sized fleck of something unidentifiable. 'Yeah, just finalizing the ignition sequence for the Independence Day show in Atlanta. Should be spectacular.' He grinned, his stubble beard catching the fluorescent light. 'Spectacular for us, anyway,' Dexter chuckled, wiping his hands on a rag that had likely seen better days. 'For the crowd, it's just 'ooh, pretty colors.'' Jason shrugged. 'Hey, pays the bills. And speaking of which...' He grabbed his worn leather jacket from the back of his chair. 'Gotta run. Jett's got a soccer game tomorrow.' 'How’s she doing?' Steve asked, pushing off the mortar tubes. 'Still kicking goals like her old man kicks off fireworks?' Jason's face softened. 'Better, actually. The little terror got honor roll this semester.' He puffed out his chest, a father's pride swelling within him. 'She’s been working her tail off.' Steve whistled. 'Wow, honor roll, huh? That’s something to celebrate.' 'Tell me about it,' Jason replied, a rueful smile tugging at his lips. 'She's already got a list a mile long. Promised her pizza and a movie. Probably the one where the princess blasts the dragon with a magical…something. All glitter and rainbows.' He shuddered playfully. 'Quite the contrast to what we do around here.' Dexter chuckled. 'She's got your brains, JD. Just gotta channel that creative energy into something…less explosive.' 'Easier said than done,' Jason laughed. 'She's got a little fire in her, just like her momma did.' The smile dimmed slightly, a shadow passing over his face. He glanced at the floor for a moment, then looked back up, brighter. 'But yeah, I'm incredibly proud. Single parenting ain't easy, but seeing her succeed... it makes it all worth it.” 'You're doing a great job, JD,' Steve said, clapping him on the shoulder. 'Jett's lucky to have you.' “Yeah,” Dexter agreed with an uncharacteristic touch of sentimentality. “She’s a bright kid. And you, my friend, are a master of controlled chaos. Both on and off the clock.” Jason grinned. 'Thanks, guys. Appreciate that. Gotta go harness some of that chaos now. See you tomorrow.” He headed for the door, the heavy metal clang echoing as he pushed it open. *** The acrid smell of gunpowder clung to Jason Dean like a second skin, even after a scalding hot shower. He scrubbed until his skin was raw, but the scent, a phantom echo of the controlled chaos he orchestrated for a living, persisted. Pyrotechnic engineering wasn't a job for the faint of heart, and tonight’s show had been particularly demanding - a roaring beast of flame and color that left him mentally and physically drained. He just wanted to collapse on the couch and watch some mindless TV.
