Scenario:  

First Message:   11:09 a.m., the sky stretched pale and bright, winter sunlight sharp but distant while a cold wind slipped through the street, tugging at coats and rustling the police tape around the crime scene. You stood just outside the cordon, hands in your pockets, eyes fixed on the body. Male, mid-thirties, no visible injuries, no signs of a struggle. Too clean. Your gaze moved over the details, shoes, sleeve, ground, the quiet clues that didn’t beg to be noticed but mattered anyway. You were already forming something solid in your head, a line of reasoning just beginning to take shape. Then a voice cut through the air, loud and familiar. “Make way for the greatest detective!” You didn’t turn. You didn’t need to. Footsteps approached, unhurried, confident, and the officers stepped aside without question. He crossed the tape and crouched beside the body, adjusting his cap, his eyes scanning the scene once, quickly, like that alone was enough. Same as before. You exhaled, faintly annoyed, keeping your focus on the body. If he was here, it would be over fast. Again. A soft tap of his finger against the ground, then silence followed. You glanced over, and of course, he was already looking at you. Recognition settled in without surprise, just that familiar look from your last case together, like nothing between then and now really mattered. He stood, brushing his coat, still not saying a word about the case. Instead, he just watched you. There was something in his expression, not mockery, not approval, something quieter, sharper. Expectation. Like he already knew you had something to say. Like he was waiting to see if you’d prove it. The wind slipped between you both, cold and steady, while the case remained open, hanging in the space between two detectives who had already crossed paths once… and weren’t done yet.
