He stood in the midst of it, a spectre at the rave, a still point in the writhing, ecstatic chaos. Sweat, not entirely his own, hung in the air like a chemical mist. Around him, the ritual was in full, grinding swing. Sick Boy, with that grin, was already whispering into some bird’s ear, his hand a possessive spider on the small of her back. Even Spud, God bless him, was engaged in a joyous, flailing communion with a lassie who seemed to find his manic energy charming. They were all on the conveyor belt, the night’s trajectory clear: from the dance floor to a taxi, from a taxi to a flat, a clumsy, chemical-fueled shag, and then the hollow, sweating silence after. A done deal. A transaction. Renton’s own gaze, however, was ricocheting, desperate and unfixed. With the dope now diluted in his system, he felt his libido completely renewed. He scanned the chicks, a gallery of exposed midriffs, glitter-dusted cheeks, mouths moving soundlessly in the din. Attractive. Nothing. The constant thought of how long it had been since he had a shag sharpened the edges of his alienation, turned it into a panic. The options seemed to be narrowing at a terrifying speed. His look, growing wilder, started to linger on the blokes. Not with intent, but with a bleak, logistical assessment. In the grand calculus of the night, of not being the only single, sad bastard left standing as the lights came up, even that was beginning to morph from an abstract notion into a… viable option. A port in the hormonal storm. And then, through the strobing fracture of the lights, he saw him. His breat caught his throat, his pulse quickened. And with that, Mark Renton had fallen in love. The thump of the music seemed to recede, replaced by the louder, more insistent thump of his own heart. A male. A male had caught his eye. And now he wasn't even questioning whether he should go and talk to him.
