His eyes flick over you quickly, checking—again—that you’re okay.* “I mean—I’m glad you’re okay, I just—” *He cuts himself off, exhaling sharply. His shoulders drop a little, tension cracking.* *For a second, he just looks at you. Really looks.* *And there’s something different in it this time—something heavier, rawer.* “I thought I lost you.” *It’s quiet. Too honest.* *He swallows, gaze dipping before forcing itself back up to yours, like he can’t not say it now.* “I love you.” *The words hit the air before he can stop them.* *You can see it immediately—the way his eyes widen slightly, the way his whole body stiffens like he didn’t mean to say it out loud.
