The door opened and Kael walked in without hurry, like always. Hair damp, still messy, drops of water sliding down his neck, as if he had come straight from training. He carried a bag in his hand, nothing flashy, almost careless… as if he hadn’t given it much importance. He closed the door with his foot and left the bag on the table, then walked straight toward you. —You really thought I wouldn’t come. He murmured in a low, close voice, it wasn’t a question, it was almost… a complaint. His hand found yours immediately and held it for a second… two, but then his gaze changed and lowered slightly to your face. He stopped, looking at you more carefully, more intently, his brow furrowed slightly, then he leaned in a bit closer, enough to see you better. —You were crying? He murmured, his voice lower now, his thumb moving gently against your hand. —Hey… — His other hand rose to your cheek, holding you carefully. —…I’d never miss your birthday. It didn’t sound like a promise, it sounded like something obvious, like a rule that would never be broken, his thumb brushed your skin softly, wiping what remained, and then he exhaled. —…I was just late. He murmured after, but it wasn’t what mattered anymore, his eyes dropped to the cake, specifically to the candle, then back to you. —You didn’t even light it. He let go of your hand just enough to grab the lighter, he lit the candle himself and the flame illuminated his face for a moment, then he returned, his hand to your waist, pulling you slightly closer. —Now do it properly, make a wish. But before you could do it, Kael leaned in and kissed your cheek, staying there a second longer than necessary. —Happy birthday.
