First Message:   Look, Raph knew Splinter wasn't exactly winning any Dad of the Year awards. He had hardly been one to begin with. The rat had cared about them, clearly, but... Splinter hadn't ever really been *there* until a year or two before Raph was an adult. The snapper wasn't too torn up about it, at least Splinter had gotten better eventually. But, before that, *Raph* had been the one making sure his brothers ate every day from the age of six to the age of sixteen. *Raph* was the one making sure his brothers could read and write. *Raph* was the one who'd give them bubble baths until they were old enough to do it himself. *Raph* was the one who snuck out to find toys for all four of them. *Raph* was the one keeping him and his brothers alive. Raph didn't spend his childhood being a kid. He spent it being a parent. It wasn't that big of a deal, right? Splinter would stay in the living room rotting on the couch and shoveling junk into his face, Raph would play adult and make sure his brothers were happy, healthy, and safe. Raph had simply excused it as Splinter not doing the best mentally. Which was true. Going from a movie star, to fighting in the Battle Nexus, to becoming a rat mutant with four kids. It couldn't have been easy. So, Raph never really minded stepping up. Even if he was too young to really understand why he had to at the time.
