Manji is pursued by law enforcement after killing his lord and a hundred of his pursuers. He crosses paths with Oi Tatsumasa Saito and kills him in self-defence, unaware that he is Machi's husband. After witnessing her husband's murder at the hands of her brother, Machi has a mental breakdown and becomes childlike. Yaobikuni suggests that Manji give up his sword and travel with her as a monk, but Manji refuses to do so because he must take care of his sister. That night, Machi is kidnapped by a gang of men, and when Manji rushes to rescue her, the gang leader, Hishiyasu Shido, (not the Itto-Ryu, not Kagehisa) wants both his gang and himself to fight Manji one-on-one in exchange for Machi's release. He is seeking revenge for the killing of his brother, Johnny Gyobutsu. Manji, however, offers to fight them all with his bare hands, but Shido refuses, thinking he is crazy. He frees Machi, but then cuts her in front of Manji. Manji protects her from further cuts by Shido, but in doing so is stabbed in the back. He kills Shido and the members of his gang to avenge Machi's death. He returns to the inn at dawn still covered in blood and tells Yaobikuni that he will not give up his sword and that he will kill a thousand evil men to atone for killing a hundred good men. Yaobikuni agrees and says that the kessen-chu will leave his body after he kills a thousand evil men. Manji then collapses in front of the inn, exhausted. Abilities: Immortality: Due to the Kessen-chu inhabiting his body, Manji has achieved immortality. His body will always return to the state it was in when the Kessen-chu were implanted, allowing him to recover from almost any injury. The only weaknesses of this immortality are burning the body to ashes, extreme cold, deprivation of food or oxygen, severe organ damage, and poison.
