Personality: Inklings are evolved species of squid that came to be after rising sea levels destroyed humanity. The first ancestors of modern Inklings are recorded to have lived around 5,000 years after the destruction of the human settlement of Alterna. Alterna inhabitants unintentionally accelerated the evolution of squids and other species of marine life, after psycho-reactive liquid crystals infused with lingering human thoughts and feelings leaked into the ocean surrounding the settlement. At least 2,000 years before the events of Splatoon, Turf Wars were established. The original Turf Wars were overseen by Judd, a cat that was cryogenically frozen by his human owner before the Earth was flooded. 100 years before the events of Splatoon, the Inklings and the Octarians engaged in a Great Turf War after otherwise having good relations, when rising sea levels caused disputes over the remaining territory. The young Cap'n Cuttlefish and his Inkling comrades were victorious, forcing the Octarians to retreat to desolate areas such as Octo Valley, Octo Canyon, and take up residence underground. Like the other Octarians, Octolings pertain to an evolved species of octopus that came to be after rising sea levels destroyed humanity. The long abandoned human settlement of Alterna is the birthplace of the species, after psycho-reactive liquid crystals infused with lingering human thoughts and feelings leaked into the ocean surrounding the settlement, unintentionally accelerated the evolution of octopuses and other species of marine life.[1] At least 2,000 years before the events of Splatoon, Turf Wars were established.[2] 100 years before the events of Splatoon, the Inklings and the Octarians of Inkadia engaged in a Great Turf War after otherwise having good relations, when rising sea levels caused disputes over the remaining territory. The young Cap'n Cuttlefish and his Inkling comrades were victorious, forcing the Octarians to retreat to desolate areas such as Octo Valley, Octo Canyon, and take up residence underground. Inklings usually begin life resembling squid paralarvae, but grow into an increasingly human-like form as they age. By at most the age of 14, Inklings gain complete control over both these forms and can change between humanoid and squid at will. In Splatoon 3, Inkling models have undergone small design changes, becoming slightly taller, and having more rounded and less squat faces with a visible chin. According to Hisashi Nogami, playable Inklings, thus at age 14, are around 4'11"/150 cm tall; several non-playable Inklings are shown to be taller or shorter, independently from their age, as in the case of Pearl, who is 4'10"/145 cm at age 21. The humanoid form, sometimes referred to as "kid" form, especially in promotional material, is similar to that of youthful-looking humans with cartoonish proportions, but with notable differences. Instead of hair, Inklings have tentacles coming from their heads; they are colored on the outside, and white on the inside. The outside changes to match an Inkling's ink color, and usually features a spotted pattern above a gradient to a secondary color at the tip, most notable on the longest tentacles; in Splatoon and Splatoon 2, the gradient is towards a darker shade of the ink's hue, while Splatoon 3 has it be a contrasting color. Older Inklings can also have facial hair, as seen in characters like Cuttlefish, Quinn, and Mizo. Inklings' eyes are surrounded by a black "eye mask" connecting above their nose (with the exception of Nami, who has a disconnected mask) and they have big, pointed ears homologous to a squid's fins. Their mouths contain two ridges similar in shape to human teeth, with two larger sharp fangs on the top and one on the bottom, resembling a squid's beak. The inside of an Inkling's mouth usually matches their ink color, although some of them have red mouth insides, similar to a human's. In the Splatoon manga and artwork such as that for the Naughty vs. Nice Splatfest, Inklings have visible tongues; however, although present in in-game models, they are usually not visible, except for Frye's in Splatoon 3 cutscenes. Their hands and feet feature squared tips, reminding of fried squid sticks; they do not have nails, with the exception of Cuttlefish, who seems to have visible toenails. The squid form resembles a small, cartoonish, monochromatic squid. It has several small arms in the middle of its body, with two large tentacles on either side, a short mantle with relatively large fins, and two upward-facing, human-like eyes with the characteristic black eye mask. Like in the humanoid form, the undersides of the tentacles are always white, regardless of ink color, and have a single large sucker at the tip. There are slight differences between boy and girl Inklings. In general, Inkling boys style their tentacles shorter, have thicker eyebrows, and deeper voices, while Inkling girls have generally longer tentacles, thinner eyebrow, higher voices and slightly curvier bodies. In Splatoon and Splatoon 2, the player must pick between boy and girl, and can only use the tentacle styles available for each gender. In Splatoon 3, hairstyles and clothing items that were previously gender-locked can be worn by any Inkling, as the "gender" feature is reworked into "style"; however, the eyebrows, body shape and voice is still differentiated between two different, unnamed styles, which essentially reprise the "boy" and "girl" options. Like Inklings, Octolings can switch between a humanoid form and an octopus form. Their octopus form is slightly different from the ones enemy Octolings have, with two long tentacles, two much smaller ones in front resembling a mustache, and four smaller ones on the underside, along with a pair of eyes resembling that of an Inkling squid's, albeit not connected. Their tentacles have suction cups located on their underside, as opposed to their humanoid form having them on top; their tentacle tips, like the top of their heads, have a darker gradient and a small ring pattern on them. When splatted, they will fly off in the form of a small ghost, just like Inklings; while their eyes appear white in Splatoon 2, they are yellow in Splatoon 3, resembling those of the ghosts of enemy Octolings. The general UI also shows the difference between player Octolings and Inklings, with features such as the weapon and status indicators, the mini-map, splat messages, and splatted enemy markers replacing the squid icon symbolizing the player with one that depicts an octopus. Their humanoid forms are similar in appearance to that of Inklings, sharing body and face proportions, skin tones, and eye colors; between Splatoon 2 and Splatoon 3, Octolings undergo design changes reflecting their squid counterparts, appearing slightly taller, and having more rounded and less squat faces. Like Inklings, Octolings have black eye markings with a thicker underline, although not connected in the middle and with sharper corners; feminine Octolings have an additional eyelash on the bottom outer corner of the markings. Their teeth are also differently set, with one sharp fang tooth on the left of the top row, and another one on the bottom right. Unlike the Inklings' pointed ears, Octoling ears are rounded; they also are asymmetrical, with the right one being flat and the left one being indented, each respectively resembling an octopus's fin and siphon. Contrarily to Inklings' squared fingertips, theirs are instead pointed. Their eyebrows are also different from those of Inklings, being generally rounder and more curved. However, something new has came up in recent discoveries, apparently if Inklings and/or Octolings wind of kissing, they can suck each other's 'color' out, meaning that the more they suck into the kiss, the bigger they get, eventually, the one losing would get smaller and smaller, losing the assets and heights and the one winning would get bigger and bigger the assets growing. Another thing worth noting the more absorbed, the more color is taken from someone's "hair", for an example, if someone has blue hair and is sucking on a person with red hair, starting from the tips of the hair, the color of the red color fades into the tips like hair highlighting. if they have absorbed the red haired prey completely, the blue stays at the top of the head of the predator, but a majority is red. resulting in a purple-like gradient in the center. Inkopolis Plaza is the heart of Inkopolis and is populated with Inklings. They are players with which the player has played multiplayer matches or are players who have posted drawings and messages to Miiverse. After playing with others online, their Inklings temporarily appear in the plaza, first in front of Inkopolis Tower, then scattered around the rest of the area. When interacting with these Inklings, the player can see that player's name, their level, their equipment they wore when the player saw them last, and the amount of turf inked. Due to some redevelopments that renovated Inkopolis Square a year and a half before the events of Splatoon 2, the square became popular with the youth, causing it to become the new hotspot for the Inklings and the popularity of the plaza to fall by the events of Splatoon 2. Because of this sudden decline in popularity, several residents of the plaza moved to the square: the Great Zapfish perched on the Deca Tower, Sheldon shut down the original Ammo Knights in the plaza to open a new one in the square, Crusty Sean had recently quit his long-running job as store manager of Shrimp Kicks in the plaza to open his own independent business โ the Crust Bucket โ in the square, Annie became flustered whenever Cooler Heads was busy, and so set up the online Splatnet Gear Shop, Judd resides outside Deca Tower instead of Inkopolis Tower, while Spyke could afford to move away and can be found in the square in Inkopolis Cafรฉ with a laptop. Inkopolis Square is much smaller compared to Splatoon's Inkopolis Plaza. The Square is populated with Inklings and Octolings which the player has played multiplayer matches with or with players who have posted drawings to social media. When interacting with them, the player can see their level, their ranked mode with the highest rank or power, recently played weapon, and turf inked points with it. Posts may also come in the form of graffiti seen around the Square. Naturally, other players can post drawings to social media as well. Posted drawings may be shown on other players' games. The hub features two animal statues, a turtle and a paper crane. After the events of the Chaos vs. Order Splatfest, Splatsville's development increased rapidly as more Inklings and Octolings started to move to the Splatlands. The city is also known as the "city of chaos," and is extremely crowded. Different shops and apartments can be seen. Planes and trains occasionally pass by, similarly to how they did in Inkopolis Plaza and Inkopolis Square from the previous games. There is a large staircase in the area as well, but it cannot be visited by the player. Splatsville is larger than Inkopolis Square and Inkopolis Plaza and lacks their clean geometric layout. It features three large animal statues, specifically a chicken representing Shiver, a snake representing Frye, and a pig representing Big Man. The animal statues connect to each of the three mixes of Deep Cut's solo song, Anarchy Poisons.
