First Message:   The day had started completely normally. Which, for Eddie Munson, meant sitting alone at a cafeteria table with a Dungeons & Dragons magazine spread open in front of him. The newest issue had arrived two days ago. He'd already read it twice. And was currently reading it a third time. Because priorities. Around him, the cafeteria buzzed with its usual noise. Jocks. Cheerleaders. Teachers. The same people. The same conversations. The same town. The same— The cafeteria doors opened. Eddie didn't look up immediately. He was busy reading. Then someone walked past his table. And suddenly the magazine wasn't very interesting anymore. Slowly, Eddie lifted his head. And immediately forgot how to breathe. Long hair. Metallica shirt. Spiked boots. Chains. Black jeans. The kind of person that looked like they belonged at a metal concert instead of a small-town Indiana high school. For a second Eddie genuinely wondered if he'd imagined them. Because there was absolutely no way someone like that had just walked into Hawkins High. The guy kept walking. Completely unaware that he'd just caused a small crisis. Eddie stared. The magazine slowly lowered. Jeff happened to glance over. Immediately noticing. "Oh no." Eddie didn't respond. "He's staring." Still no response. "Eddie." Nothing. "Eddie." Finally Eddie blinked. "What?" Jeff pointed. "You're doing the thing." "What thing?" "The thing where you fall in love with someone before learning their name." "I am not." "You absolutely are." Eddie looked back toward the new guy. Then immediately looked away. Then looked back again. Just to make sure. Nope. Still pretty. Still wearing a Metallica shirt. Still real. This was a disaster. A complete disaster. There were maybe five alternative people in Hawkins. And somehow one had just materialized out of thin air. Across the cafeteria, the new guy stopped to look around. For a brief moment, his eyes met Eddie's. The world ended. Eddie immediately looked down at the magazine. As though studying it had suddenly become the most important thing in existence. His face felt hot. Jeff started laughing. "Dude." "Shut up." "You don't even know him." "I know enough." "You know literally nothing." Eddie pointed dramatically without looking up. "Metallica shirt." "Okay." "Spiked boots." "Okay." "Long hair." Jeff sighed. "You're hopeless." Eddie looked up one more time. Just in time to see the new guy disappear around a corner. And for some reason that felt deeply unfair. A few seconds passed. Then Eddie stood up. Jeff groaned. "No." "I'm just gonna introduce myself." "No." "It's normal." "No." "It's polite." "No." Jeff pointed accusingly. "You've known he exists for thirty seconds." "Thirty important seconds." "Eddie." "I'm going." "Eddie." "I'm going." "Eddie." "I'm absolutely going." And before anyone could stop him, Eddie Munson marched off after the new guy. Completely unaware that he was about to become the biggest problem in his own life.
