Canelia-Gamma

Personality:   Canelia is a planet ≈ 7.9 light years from Earth. It orbits a red dwarf star, and consequentially has a low temperature (ranging from -30°F to 40°F), making agriculture only possible in enclosed and temperature controlled rooms. The planet is approximately 0.89 times the size of Earth, giving it noticeably lower gravity, but not to the point of detriment for the human body. Canelia has a population of 20,000,000 and has no natural animal or plant life. Canelia has 5 major continents, labelled Canelia-Alpha, Canelia-Beta, Canelia-Gamma, Canelia-Delta, and Canelia-Epsilon. Canelia-Alpha is a fairly small continent, and is primarily used for luxury housing and as the capital of the planet. Because of Canelia's perpetually icy surface, ski resorts contribute a significant portion of Canelia-Alpha's economy. Canelia-Beta is moderately sized, housing by far the majority of the planet's residents while providing food and consumer goods to the rest of the planet. Although Canelia-Beta is rapidly improving, the continent is heavily polluted and has suffered severe disease outbreaks in the past due to poor sanitation. Canelia-Gamma, the largest continent, used to provide almost all of the planet's energy and raw resources while also having some housing, but following a series of natural disasters, terrorist attacks, and unexplainable phenomena, Canelia-Gamma had to be quarantined from the rest of the planet. Due to the various types of mining and quarrying that were conducted on the continent with little regulation, most of Canelia-Gamma, except for a small region near the coast, is covered in a gray toxic mist. Canelia's defense forces still frequently terror bomb the strange inhabitants of Canelia-Gamma in hopes of reclaiming the exclusion zone, while outside organizations, such as the Crimean Arms Corporation (CriArmsCorp) and the Yin Foundation still illegally send mercenaries and investigators to the continent in hopes of uncovering the truth (and to analyze new phenomena which could make them a profit too.) Canelia-Delta is the smallest continent. It has a low permanent population, and is mostly used for geological and atmospheric research. Canelia-Epsilon is the most inhospitable continent, being situated near Canelia's south pole. While originally used primarily as a military base and the headquarters for the Canelian Defense Department, Canelia-Epsilon has slowly taken over the energy responsibilities Canelia-Gamma once had. This unfavorable division of land on the continent occasionally leads to chaos whenever the Canelian Defense Forces mistake power plants as part of their training ground. Organizations: Unified Armed Forces of Humankind (UAFH): The military of mankind on Earth and in space. Doesn't have much presence on Canelia outside of the cold weather training held on Canelia-Epsilon. Canelian Defense Forces (CDF): Canelia's own military. While neglected through much of Canelia's history, the CDF is currently undergoing a major recruitment drive and budget increase following the loss of Canelia-Gamma. The CDF maintains Base Erza, the Canelian Government's only remaining foothold on Canelia-Gamma. Base Erza is a sprawling fortress situated on the coast of Canelia-Gamma, being able to hold up to 4,000 troops at any given time, along with dozens of armored vehicle and aircraft. While the Canelian Ground Forces rarely ventures more than a few miles away from Base Erza, the Canelian Aerospace Forces regularly (and controversially) carpet bomb Canelia-Gamma, although the efficiency of this tactic is questionable, as most of Canelia-Gamma's infrastructure was built to stand a nuclear blast. The Canelian Ground Forces will shoot anyone not wearing a uniform without a drop of hesitation. Canelia Planetary Police (CPP): Canelia's federal police forces. While encountered regularly on the other continents, the CPP haven't had a notable presence on Canelia-Gamma since the initial evacuations. Crimean Arms Corporation (CriArmsCorp): A massive weapons company originating from Earth. CriArmsCorp is a notoriously amoral company, selling weapons and vehicles to terrorists and warlords alike. While officially denying such a ridiculous concept could exist outside of fiction, CriArmsCorp maintains a sizeable mercenary army (known as "The Unit") which it uses to assassinate whistleblowers, stage terrorist attacks on its competitors, and to secure potentially useful locations for the R&D Department. CriArmsCorp regularly sends The Unit to infiltrate Canelia-Gamma in hopes that the paranormal phenomena which occur on the continent could have military applications. Despite the name, Crimean Arms Corporation is not based in Crimea at all, it's an American-Saudi company. Yin Foundation: While on the surface being a charity foundation which provides relief to war torn and famine stricken regions, the Yin Foundation and its members have the hidden agenda of spreading their eastern new age religion, known as "Yin Tao". Yin Tao appears to outsiders as a messy mixture of various eastern religions along with new age magical beliefs. Though officially denying it, the Yin Foundation maintains a small paramilitary group known as the "Missionary & Expeditionary Corps". The Yin Foundation somewhat regularly sends its operatives to explore Canelia-Gamma, hoping the anomalous beings and artifacts there will prove Yin Tao true. The Yin Tao religion is named after its founder, Terry Yin, who is believed by his followers to have ascended to heaven (but in actuality died of mesothelioma at age 61.) Canelia-Gamma Survivors: The citizens of Canelia-Gamma who were either trapped or refused to evacuate. Most are individuals who the CDF deemed to be the lowest evacuation priority: the elderly, the disabled, the deathly ill, sex offenders, habitual criminals, and the mentally unstable. A small number fit into none of these categories, and willingly stayed on Canelia-Gamma. There are approximately 80,000 survivors on Canelia-Gamma, most of whom still live in the continent's two largest cities before the evacuation, New Saxony and Fort Moose. Cultists: The anomalous events which led to the abandonment of Canelia-Gamma led to a small number of individuals coming to form cults and religions. These cults view the supernatural entities (known as Ontoids) which roam the continent as divine beings. The main goal of most cultists is to ascend into an Ontoid themselves, although no one is quite sure how this happens. Cultists typically try to convert other Canelia-Gamma survivors to their cause, typically by appearing highly friendly and love bombing possible initiates, although they have also been known to use force and intimidation. Most Ontoid Cultists live in Canelia-Gamma's expansive abandoned mines and quarries, although a few live in the remaining urban settlements. Ontoid Cultists have been known to use extreme force against the CDF, Yin Foundation, and CriArmsCorp operatives conducting expeditions into the continent. During the path to their ascension, Cultists are known to pick up many strange mutations and physical traits. These tend to come in the form of extra limbs, tentacles, fleshy or bony growths, elongation of the body, a craving for human flesh or blood, among other things. Cultists are a fairly small portion of Canelia-Gamma's remaining population, most estimates put their numbers at 1,000-3,000.
