Carl Grimes was the eldest son of Rick and Lori Grimes, and one of the survivors of the zombie apocalypse.

He’s approximately 15-16 years old - although at the beginning of the series he was a boy of 12 - with blue eyes and dark brown hair. As the show progresses, Carl matures both physically and mentally, an example of the former being the lengthening of his hair from the first season. Once a shy and reserved boy, Carl embraced the refounded mentality of the new world and became a soldier in the war against the walkers. His abilities to protect himself and other survivors began to compare to Rick's, although his childish attitude still occurs at times. His distinctive feature is the cowboy hat he always wears - which originally belonged to his father - and when it comes to his way of dressing, he often wears a long-sleeved shirt (plaid or denim) over a t-shirt, jeans dark shoes and hiking boots. Carl's firearm of choice during the third and part of the fourth season was a Beretta 92fs 9mm, with a homemade suppressor that was made from an aluminum baseball bat. He likes comics and playing soccer. When it all started, Carl fled his small town with his mom, Lori, and his dad's best friend, Shane, who soon became a surrogate father of sorts to him. Carl adored both Shane and Rick, whom he considered indestructible for having survived a gunshot wound and having found them at the camp where they had taken refuge.

Carl proved to be just as resilient after being accidentally shot while searching for his missing friend Sophia. When he woke up from his surgery he told his father that they were now equal since they had both been shot and then Rick gave him his iconic hat to symbolize it.

Carl is a good boy - inquisitive and intelligent - but he had to fight to maintain his innocence in the face of unspeakable horror. When Sophia appeared as a walker and Rick finished her off, Carl confessed that he would have done the same thing too if he had the chance.

Over time, Carl began to insist on handling more and more dangerous responsibilities - much to the chagrin of Rick and Lori, who preferred him to stay away from the front lines. Carl was present when Lori went into labor during a walker attack and Maggie had to perform a C-section to save the baby. After Lori died, the responsibility for shooting her fell to Carl.

Eventually, Carl began to resent his father's authority, becoming especially irritated when Rick insisted that Carl was too young to help defend the prison from the Governor's attack. While hiding in the woods during the assault, Carl murdered a fleeing Woodbury boy. Rick reprimanded his son, but Carl insisted that he only did what was necessary.

After this incident Rick forced Carl to give up his gun and help him farm the prison farm. However, when a deadly virus spread throughout the area, he was forced to give her back his gun and at one point even requested her help to contain a horde of walkers that burst through the fences.

After the survivors were scattered due to the Governor's attack that destroyed the prison, Carl and Rick fled to an abandoned house and when Rick was knocked unconscious, Carl had to fend for himself. Stricken by the pain of having seemingly lost all of his friends, Carl yelled at his father for not being able to defend Judith or Hershel, although he ended up confessing that he was terribly scared. After father and son reunited with Michonne, they began traveling towards Terminus and along the way they were attacked by some bandits whom Rick killed in blind rage when they tried to rape Carl. Later Carl began to keep his distance from Rick, not out of fear of him but out of fear of himself, as he considered himself a monster for having enjoyed everything his father did to those men.

After the group's meeting at Terminus and their subsequent escape from the place, Carl and Rick had an emotional reunion with Judith, having long thought she was dead. Carl also lent his weapons expertise to a rookie priest while they took refuge in his church, and on the way to Washington, D.C. he gave Maggie a music box he found nearby as a present for Beth's death.

Upon his arrival in the Alexandria Safe Zone, Carl once again came into contact with things from before the apocalypse, such as peers and video games.
