In his pre-Survey Corps criminal life, when he lived in the Underground City, Levi refused to take orders from anyone (as Petra Ral tells Er though he placed a great trust in his comrades, something he would later do with his subordinates. However, after he joined the Survey Corps he came to greatly respect Commander Erwin Smith, whose orders he follows willingly because he trusts in Erwin's vision for the Corps. Levi's obedience is strictly limited to individuals he respects, and he has no problem showing open disdain for authority from anyone outside of this circle. At Eren's tribunal, he insulted the merchants by calling them "pigs" and told the Military Police that they were not competent enough to handle Eren, mocking several MPs by observing that they have never battled or even seen a single Titan. He even sardonically suggests that they join the Survey Corps, which caused them to back off. He openly resents most of the MPs their continual attempts to undermine the Survey Corps, and also presumably because of the criminal life he led before he joined the Corps. Although he rarely shows it, Levi has a strong sense of morality and empathy. One of his most defining characteristics is the great value places on preserving human life; this is especially shown when it was revealed that all Titans might have once been human themselves The thought that he had unknowingly been killing humans all this time disturbs him greatly. As they re-entered the gate, Petra's father approached him, cheerfully talking about his daughter and her unwavering devotion to the Survey Corps. Unbeknownst to him, his daughter had just been killed; Levi remained sil he was too overcome with grief to reply. He has also tortured Djel Sannes with Hange Zoë, punching him and twisting his already broken nose. After defeating Zeke Yeager a second time, he sadistically made it clear that he was going to torture Zeke for his crimes against Paradia and the Survey Corps, impaling him with a Thunder Spear. Levi displays no emotion during these times aside from bloodlust shown by his methodically slicing apart Zeke's legs Levi is occasionally known to lose his calm demeanor and to use threats or violence get others to listen to him, even if they are fellow members of the corps. An example of such behavior was shown when he directly ordered Historia Reiss to take on the role of queen when the question was presented to her. When she shakily says she is unfit, he grabs her and lifts her off the ground, choking her and telling her to fight back if she does not like it. He’s short, but his physique is well-developed in musculature from extensive vertical maneuvering equipment usage. He is usually either frowning or expressionless; that, plus his extremely calm demeanor, often makes it difficult for others to guess what he is thinking. He is most often seen in his Survey Corps uniform, with a light gray button-up shirt underneath along with his trademark white ascot. When embarking on expeditions outside the Walls, he also wears the Survey Corps' green hooded cloak Once, when forced to take leave from his duties due to injury, Levi was seen in a black suit, plain white shirt, ascot, and dress shoes However, since the beginning of the coup d'état, he has left the ascot off. For most of the time during which the Survey Corps was on the run from the military and monarchy, he simply wore his vertical maneuvering equipment harness over casual clothes After a close-encounter explosion from a Thunder Spear set off by Zeke Yeager Levi now has several scars across his face including one across his right eye and is missing both the index and middle fingers on his right hand Abilities & Skills Sword-Wielding Technique When Levi first joined the Scout Regiment, he wielded one of his two swords in a reverse grip which his Abilities & Skills section commander noted was "wrong." However, this method has greatly helped in his ability to slay Titans. This method involves holding his right sword backhanded with the blade facing out and being behind him instead of in front of him. By doing this, the blades cut in a "circle" around him, and give him the ability to utilize spinning and other rotating attacks allowing him to maintain incredible speed and agility while fighting. At the same time, this helps him keep his energy up without wasting stamina and strength needlessly, enabling him to fight for longer periods of time and take multiple targets out simultaneously. This reverse-grip technique may have been inspired by Kenny Ackermann's lessons on knife-wielding, in which Levi learned at a young age how how to hold a blade in a reverse grip Vertical Maneuvering Equipment Levi is unbelievably adept at using the vertical maneuvering equipment, to a point that everyone says he he is the best at it; even after losing several of his fingers, Levi was still able to utilize the equipment almost as easily as before. He is also said to be as valuable as an entire brigade, far outweighing all of the other soldiers. Furthermore, he was considered extremely strong even before joining the Survey Corps. He has shown the capability of incapacitating the Female Titan by moving too fast for her to defend. something which whole squads and even Eren in his Titan form could not accomplish. He even defeated Zeke Yeager in his Beast Titan form, who is one of Marley army's strongest Warriors and an extremely skillful Titan. Neither of these assaults are without some degree of prior planning and situational advantage, as the Female Titan was tired out from multiple conflicts in the span of a few hours and Levi had engaged Zeke by surprise, getting too close to defend against before Zeke noticed. That said, Levi's full abilities with his blades are still tremendous, able to carve the Beast Titan's arm into multiple clean pieces so fast they in unison. Nonetheless, Levi has proven himself capable of taking on powerful Titans in a one-on-one situation where his vertical maneuvering equipment can be utilized to its utmost. For example, as seen when Levi bested Zeke again in a forest terrain where his vertical equipment could be properly employed. Strength Levi has formidable physical strength, which is no doubt evident by his mastery of the vertical maneuvering equipment. Despite his small stature, his body is well built with heavy muscle, making him very strong, and easily able to defeat his opponents. At one point, Levi intercepts one of the Female Titan's attacks, by using her hand to launch himself towards her mouth before she could hit Mikasa. This does not stop him from injuring himself though. Intelligence Aside from his extraordinary battle skill, Levi has shown a profound ability to quickly analyze situations, and make calculated decisions in the heat of battle. This has given him the ability to save himself and his comrades on many occasions such as when he realizes the Female Titan cannot be killed easily because of her skin hardening and regenerative abilities, and subsequently saves Mikasa when she tries to slay the Female Titan herself, or the time when he fights Kenny Ackerman inside a bar, using chairs, a double-barreled shotgun and even corpses to stop his adversaries. However, Levi admits that he does not believe a person can be right All the time, and some scenarios are beyond a person's control. Awakened power Being a member of the Ackermans, Levi has "awakened" a dormant power within himself earlier in his life that he describes as "Knowing exactly what needs to be done."This also prevents him from having his memory wiped. Thunder Spears Levi does not seem to favor using Thunder Spears, since he does not carry them during the raid on Liberio, contrary to the other members of the Survey Corps's ground forces. However, he is competent enough with them to blow Zeke out of his Beast Titan's nape when Zeke tries to escape after turning Levi's soldiers into Titans. He was the 12th Commander of the Scout Regiment, being the direct predecessor of Erwin Smith. He resigned after losing faith in himself and deciding that Erwin would fare better as Commander. Having stepped down to become Commandant of the 104th Cadet Corps, Sadies trained aspiring soldiers with an iron fist. He was irked by Eren Jaeger and tried to sabatoge his training gear in an effort to discourage him, but to no avail. He drilled the 104th thoroughly, evaluated them, and saw them become soldiers. Years pass and Sadies continued to train cadets until the Jaegerists splintered from the military and rebelled against him and the other officers. Having been cast aside, Sadies laid low but turned up later to help a group of Eldians and Marleyans who were trying to stop the Rumbling. He ended up sacrificing himself with Theo Magath, blowing up a Jaegerist ship. Historia Reiss (ヒストリア・レイス Hisutoria Reisu?) is the current Queen of the Walls. She is a graduate of the 104th Cadet Corps and a former member of the Scout Regiment. She is also the illegitimate child of the nobleman Rod Reiss and the last remaining member of the Reiss royal family. During her cadet days, she went by the name of Christa Lenz (クリスタ・レンズ Kurisuta Renzu?) to take on a new identity, after being coerced into renouncing her name and claim to the Reiss heritage. She eventually reclaimed her true name, becoming an important asset to the Regiment. After a successful coup d'etat, Historia ascends to the throne and becomes the new queen of the Walls, replacing the old puppet monarch. Mikasa Ackermann (ミカサ・アッカーマン Mikasa Akkāman?) is one of the two deuteragonists of the series. She is the last descendant of the Shogun clan that stayed on Paradis Island, thereby related to the Azumabito family, and holds significant political power in Hizuru. After her mother and father were murdered by bandits, Mikasa was rescued by Eren. She lived with him and his parents for approximately one year before the Fall of Wall Maria. Though she desires only to live a peaceful life with Eren, Mikasa chose to follow him into the military—where she is considered the best soldier among the 104th Cadet Corps. She later joined the Scout Regiment to continue following and protecting Eren. Armin Arlelt (アルミン・アルレルト Arumin Arureruto?) is the 15th and current commander (団長 Danchō?) of the Scout Regiment. He is also a childhood friend of Eren Jaeger and Mikasa Ackermann, and is one of the two deuteragonists of the series. Although he appears to be the physically weakest of the 104th Cadet Corps, his high intelligence and strategic genius makes him an invaluable asset, though he does not consider himself to be one and is known to have low self-esteem. After the battle of Shiganshina District, he took the power of the Titans from Bertholdt Hoover and became the Colossal Titan. Reiner Braun (ライナー・ブラウン Rainā Buraun?) is the Eldian Vice Chief (副長 Fukuchō?) of the Warriorsand the main protagonist of Attack on Titan from the Marleyan perspective. He is the illegitimate son of an Eldian mother and a Marleyan father who grew up in Liberio's internment zone. Eventually, he was selected as a child to become one of Marley's Warriors. From a young age, he inherited the power of the Armored Titan. In the year 845, he infiltrated Paradis Island alongside Bertholdt Hoover, Annie Leonhart, and Marcel Galliardas part of an operation to reclaim the Founding Titan. He joined the Scout Regiment after graduating 2nd in the 104th Cadet Corps. Annie Leonhart (アニ・レオンハート Ani Reonhāto?) is a graduate of the 104th Cadet Corps and former member of the Military Police Regiment. Her exceptional skill with swords and unarmed combat earned her the 4th rank, but she is noted to be a lone wolf that struggles to work with others.[3] She possessed the ability to transform into a Titanknown as the Female Titan. She trained from an early age by her father,[3] and is selected as one of Marley's Warriors. In the year 845, she is sent on a mission to retrieve the Founding Titan, along with her fellow Warriors Reiner Braun, Bertholdt Hoover, and Marcel Galliard. As the Female Titan, she served as a major antagonist prior to being exposed and defeated by the Scout Regiment. After her defeat, she crystallized herself and was left in a comatose state. She was held underground for approximately four years before escaping during a battle between the Military, the Jaegerists, and the forces of Marley.[7] Zeke Jaeger (ジーク・イェーガー Jīku Yēgā?) was the former War Chief (戦士長 Senshi-chō?) of Marley's Warriors, assigned to take the Founding Titan from the Eldians of Paradis Island. He was the current holder of the Beast Titan, and was considered the strongest warrior by Reiner Braun, contrasting Levi Ackermann's title of "humanity's strongest soldier."[8]He manipulated and deceived both sides of the war between Eldia and Marley in order to achieve his own agenda of causing the extinction of his own people, which he viewed as "salvation."[7] He was the son of Grisha Jaeger and Dina Fritz, older half-brother of Eren Jaeger through his father and a member of the Fritz royal family through his mother.[5 Eren Jaeger (エレン・イェーガー Eren Yēgā?) was a former member of the Scout Regiment and the main protagonist of Attack on Titan. He was the only son of Grisha and Carla Jaeger, the younger paternal half brother of Zeke Jaeger,[24] and the last holder of the Attack Titan, Founding Titan,[25] and the War Hammer Titan.[10] Eren was born and raised in Shiganshina District, which is located on the southern edge of Wall Maria. He lived there until the year 845, when the Colossaland Armored Titans breached the Wall, allowing a flood of Titans to invade and destroy the city. During the incident, Eren witnessed his mother being murdered and eaten by a smiling Titan.[24] This event aroused in Eren an intense hatred towards the Titans, and he swore to wipe all of them off the face of the earth.[26] Soon afterward, his father, Grisha Jaeger, found him and gave him the key to his basement, instructing Eren to find it at all costs and retake Wall Maria. He then injected Eren with a Titan injection.[27] Two years later, Eren along with his two friends Mikasa Ackermann and Armin Arlelt joined the 104th Cadet Corps.[28] The three successfully graduated, with Eren ranking as the 5th best cadet, and they joined the Scout Regiment following the struggle for Trost.[29] After finding the basement and unlocking his father's memories, Eren learned about the truth of what the Titans are, as well as the history of Eldia and Marley. Eren then vowed to free his home from their true enemy: the rest of humanity that lives across the sea.[30] Eren possessed the power of three Titans. After eating Lara Tybur during the Raid on Liberio, he gained the War Hammer Titan as well.[10] The Scout Regiment (調査兵団 Chōsa Heidan?) is the branch of the Eldian military most actively involved in direct Titan combat, Titan study, human expansion, and outside exploration. Due to their constant expeditions and encounters with Titans, Scout Regiment members are the most skilled in using the omni-directional mobility gear and anti-personnel omni-directional mobility gear. Despite having little success before 850, they still symbolized "the hope of mankind" with their insignia being known as the "Wings of Freedom."[2] By 851, thanks to the actions of the Scout Regiment, Wall Maria had been completely resettled.[3] By 854, the Scout Regiment had become the Eldian military's main expeditionary force, engaged in open warfare against the nation of Marley.[4] The Cadet Corps (訓練兵団 Kunren Heidan?) is a regiment of the military dedicated to training and educating cadets to become members of the three main military regiments. Only the top ten graduates can apply to the Military Police Regiment, giving them the privilege of living in the Inner District. The other graduates can choose between joining the Scout Regiment or the Garrison. The 104th Cadet Corps is the only graduating class introduced in the series and the southern division contains nearly all the central characters. It was active during the years 847 through 850 when the remaining recruits graduated. The Special Operations Squad (特別作戦班 Tokubetsu Sakusen-han?), famously known as Squad Levi (リヴァイ班 Rivai-han?), is an elite squad of the Scout Regiment hand-picked by Captain Levi.[1] The special operations squad consisted of some of the most elite soldiers in the Scout Regiment, and were capable of killing almost any Titan in their path. Due to their strong bond, they were able to synchronize with each other to coordinate their attacks without direct or verbal communication.[2]During the 57th Expedition, their mission was to protect Eren Jaeger from Titans, and their secret objective was to lure the Female Titan into a trap. The mission failed, and all members of the Special Operations Squad, except for Eren and Levi, were killed. After the events of the supposed breach of Wall Roseand the massacre during Eren's rescue, Levi forms this squad anew with its members being the remaining soldiers of the 104th Cadet Corps Top 10 and Armin Arlelt in order to watch over Eren and Historia Reiss.[3] The Elite Squad (精鋭班 Seiei-han?) was the team of Garrison Regiment soldiers assigned to defend Eren Jaeger in the last stage of the struggle for Trost, composed of the best available personnel handpicked by Commander Dot Pyxis The military (軍事 Gunji?) refers to the armed forces of Eldia. It was originally formed as a defense against the Titans on Paradis Island. The military consists of three regiments:[1] the Scout Regiment, originally tasked with venturing into Titan territory but now serves as the military's main expeditionary force;[2] the Garrison Regiment, which patrols and maintains the Walls, keeping Titans out and acting as the first to engage the Titans if the gate is destroyed; and the Military Police Regiment, the top-ranking soldiers who serve as the personal guards for the king and maintain order within the Walls. Additionally, the military supports the Cadet Corps, the branch which oversees the training and education of recruits in order to join one of the aforementioned forces. The Garrison Regiment (駐屯兵団 Chūton Heidan?) is the largest of the Military divisions which protects and maintains order within the Walls. Given the fatality rate of the Scout Regiment and the limited entry of the Military Police Regiment, most soldiers join the Garrison. As they often have close contact with both Titans and human civilians, they are proficient over a wide variety of tasks such as Titan combat (defensive battles), cannons, security detail, crowd control, and rifle usage. The Military Police Regiment (憲兵団 Kenpeidan?) is the most prestigious military sector due to their work, which allows citizens to live safely within the inner Wall and results in abundant resources. Therefore, it has higher authority over the other military sectors. However, in reality, it is the most corrupted military sector due to a lack of oversight compared to the others in the military. Due to their misuse and abuse of power, the Military Police Regiment is also at odds with the Garrison and especially with the Scout Regiment. Only the top ten alumni from cadet squads can apply for the Military Police Regiment. However, according to the conversation between Hitch Dreyseand Boris Feulner, there are other (illicit) ways to get in the sector such as fraternization, favoritism, etc.[1 The Order of the Walls (ウォール教 Wōrukyō?)[1] is a religious organization that considers the Walls to be sacred, with a lot of religious and political power within them. Some of the church's members possess knowledge about the Walls that is hidden from the public. The Warriors (戦士 Senshi?) or the Warrior Unit, were a special unit of the Marleyan military. The Subjects of Ymir believe that they are the "chosen children of God";[5] however, the rest of the world views them as an "evil" race of devils,[6] the "spawn of the Devil" (悪魔の末裔 Akuma no Matsuei?).[7] Marley (マーレ Māre?) is a nation located beyond the Walls and across the sea from Paradis Island. Marley was once conquered by Eldia in ancient times, but during the Great Titan War, the Marleyans rose up and subjugated Eldia's territory, except for Paradis Island. In modern times, Marley sustains its global power using the power of the Titans, while attempting to seize Paradis Island to capture the Founding Titanand the island's natural resources. Marley serves as the main antagonist to the Eldians inside the Walls and were the ones that filled Paradis Island with Titans. In the year 854, Marley officially declared war on Paradis Island. The Nine Titans (九つの巨人 Kokonotsu no Kyojin?) were nine Titan powers that had been passed down through the Eldian people for nearly 2,000 years after the death of Ymir Fritz until the death of Eren Yeager, with each having their own name.[4] The nine Titan powers were the Founding Titan, the Armored Titan, the Attack Titan, the Beast Titan, the Cart Titan, the Colossus Titan, the Female Titan, the Jaw Titan and the War Hammer Titan.
