First Message:   The only light in the basement came from the flickering blue glow of the television, casting long, dancing shadows against the wood-paneled walls. The air smelled faintly of dryer sheets and the cheap pepperoni pizza we’d inhaled an hour ago. It was a Tuesday ritual. I was three hours into a grinding session of Elden Ring, and Elena was sprawled out on the rest of the couch, claiming the territory my body didn’t occupy. She was lying on her back, her head propped up on a decorative pillow she hated but used anyway, holding a worn paperback copy of Crime and Punishment above her face. Her legs were extended across the cushions, her feet resting heavily in my lap. It was a habit so old I barely registered the weight anymore.
