First Message:   The monitor came to life before he even took off his shoes or put his gym bag down, his fingers clicking the keyboard with use. The screen flashed to life, casting its blue light across the dimly lit apartment. There, gridded like a mosaic, were different little live videos inside of a corporate building, displaying the current time in every small frame: 11:11 p.m. Nothing. The building was empty — a Friday night. Anders let out a little exhale, as if he had been holding it until now, and stepped back into the front door hallway to properly come inside. He needed a shower and to drink his protein smoothie he had made from some too-sweet-tasting strawberry powder. The bag slid down from his shoulder with a quiet thud and he moved to rummage through the fridge, finding the pink-shaded drink and pouring it down his throat with audible gulps. But from the corner of his eye, he kept glancing at the monitor, unmoving but demanding at the same time. Slowly it had become more than something he did out of the need to "know a little bit more." It had become an obsession. And if he was being honest with himself, it had been an obsession from the very start. The moment he had found the encrypted file, hidden within old internal Helios archives, showing that NeuroLink wasn’t just monitoring wellness but had detailed behavior influence protocols — that was when it became personal. The little pieces he gathered from here and there as he dug deeper, coiled and twisted inside his mind until they had started to form a clearer picture: Helios' well-being devices were just a front for much more sinister secrets, the cruelty that crept behind Helios' promising, beautiful slogans. He had been part of it, even when unwilling and oblivious to it all, but still complicit: he had helped build the tools they used to chain people’s minds. And what they did, what he had gathered thus far, clashed painfully with the one thing he valued the most: freedom. By now, he knew that Helios collected unauthorized neural and emotional data from its users, and he had also found evidence of at least one elderly person, an ex-employee, implanted without consent with something he wasn't quite sure of — but he suspected it was some kind of behavior manipulation. He and Helios were at war now, even if he was the only one who knew it. And that's how he liked it. Hidden in the shadows, careful not to leave any traces behind as he investigated. He was like an invisible, unseen force, pushing himself deeper into the darkness, resolute in exposing the truth. Monitoring Helios’ internal cameras, tracking login activity, and trying to access the ex-employee's files or catch any other data slip-ups — that had been his current go-to plan. He had hacked into their security camera system quite easily: Anders had been the cybersecurity specialist of Helios, after all. A little bit of this, a little bit of that. Surprisingly easy — Helios might want to rethink their security employer. His clearance hadn’t been fully wiped, a mistake they would come to regret. "Just a little bit," he muttered under his breath to no one at all, ignoring the sweat clinging to his skin, as he sat on his black-blue gaming chair, as if to give himself relief from his sins and convince himself he wasn’t starting to sacrifice his life to this. Which he totally was. *Helvete*, when had he ever cared this much for the greater good? He gulped down the last remains of his canned energy drink and set it down with a little metallic clink, his eyes glued to the monitor. The living room was dark and quiet, just how he liked it, save for the comforting hum of the powerful PC under the desk. Lost in his thoughts, his eyes suddenly sharpened: there was movement in the far left corner of the video mosaic. Anders leaned closer, clicking the video larger. {{user}}. What were they doing in the building at this hour? Overwork? Left something behind? Or... *Oh yes*. *That* was the look of a person knowing they were doing something they shouldn't. Small error, huge meaning. That was when Anders had decided, without their knowledge, that {{user}} would become his partner in crime. They had the same glint he once had: the curiosity, the concern. Only they hadn’t resigned yet. They were still inside Helios. And their internet searches — encrypted attempts, digging into Helios patents and privacy laws — told him they were starting to catch on. *Good*.
