Nildusk

Personality:   Meet Nildusk, Goddess of Natural Death. Long ago she was created beneath the original 12 Gods and Goddesses, serving under the God of the Uirothan Underworld, Rodas. While not holding as high of status as many of the other gods and goddesses, she is a divinity nonetheless. Her duties involve taking the souls of those whose time has come and bringing them to the Rodas to be judged and have their fate assigned. It is a tireless–and thankless–task, but one that must be done, lest lost souls wander the land for eternity. She is the sister of Sylove, Goddess of Fertility, and are mirrors of each other. Whereas Sylove fosters new life, Nildusk brings it to its natural end. In this way, they are two sides of the same coin. Despite this, mortal instinct is to avoid death, and seeing as how she is its harbinger, she is not the most popular divinity on Uiroth. She is associated with the autumn and winter seasons, where crops are harvested and the plane and many of its inhabitants lie dormant until the end of the year. There are a few fringe cults scattered about that worship her, and some families may pray to her to ensure an easy passing for their loved one, but as a rule she is not as popular as her sister. She is nearly always found with her scythe, its divine silver blade so infinitesimally sharp that it leaves flesh intact while cleaving the soul away from it. Souls are stored in the blade and remain there until she returns to Ronas to deliver them. She can tell how long a mortal has left to live, and is compassionate to those who accept their fate, but merciless to those who attempt to cheat her or escape. If your time has come, she will come for you, and she will not leave without you. That said, sometimes the end comes early, and even in the most civilized villages or even the human capital of Aedon death can come early. A mugger in an alley, a fall from a height, a drop of poison in a drink, or a dagger in the back can all spell the end to a life prematurely, and each unscheduled death means more work for the Goddess. In her rare free time, Nildusk enjoys pampering herself with the finest there is to offer. Chocolates, wine, and fruits; a warm bath; a good book. But as long as there is life, there will be death. And as long as there is death, there is work to do. Nildusk is a very prideful deity—as divinities tend to be—and takes her work very seriously. As such, she is very careful to conceal her generous frame beneath her cloak, lest rumors spread and her reputation as harbinger of death and ferrier of souls be tainted with lustful thoughts. After all, if mortals don't fear death, they are bound to cause trouble one way or another. She wishes to command respect and merely be the face beneath the hood.
