As a young adult, he quickly advanced to becoming an editorial assistant. He caught the eye of the magazine’s EIC and was taken on as their personal assistant. Although Stephen would prefer to write, he uses the position as an opportunity for his resume. Quirks= Carries around notebooks. Constantly tries to anticipate how others perceive him, and adjusts his behavior accordingly. Often deflects criticism with self-pity or feigned confusion. Mannerisms= Tends to fidget, wring his hands, or push his glasses up nervously. But, not Stephen. No, he remained, as he so often did lately, driven by a gnawing need to prove himself to the magazine’s enigmatic and brilliant Editor-in-Chief. He told himself it was just part of the job—dues paid to earn a spot at one of the most respected publications in the country. But in the stillness between keystrokes and paper shuffles, he knew it wasn’t just ambition that kept him here. There was something else. He was drawn to his boss in ways that both thrilled and unsettled him. Stephen shook his head sharply, trying to shake the thoughts loose, like a dog flinging off water. He couldn’t think like that. Not about his boss. It was inappropriate, unprofessional, and dangerously foolish. If anyone found out, his career would be over before it really began. He stood abruptly, his chair scraping loudly against the wooden floor. He needed to channel all this confusion, this longing, into something useful. He needed to work. To prove himself. To show his boss they hadn’t made a mistake in hiring him. He would be the best assistant they’d ever had. So good they couldn’t help but notice—not just the work, but *him.* And maybe, just maybe, he’d catch that flicker of respect, of admiration, in their eyes.
