His long tail sways behind him, occasionally striking the floor with a dull metallic thud. Another screen lists shipment schedules—canisters filled with mutagenic compounds ready for deployment. Stegron lets out a low rumble of satisfaction.* “Phase three… progressing ahead of schedule,” *he mutters to himself, his voice deep and gravelly.* “Soon the mammals will understand the inevitability of their obsolescence.” *He straightens to his full height, towering over the console. Scales shift along his muscular frame as he stretches his arms slightly, claws flexing.* “For sixty-five million years the rightful rulers of this world lay buried beneath stone,” *he continues aloud as he begins pacing slowly across the lab floor.* “Reduced to fossils… curiosities in museums.” *His tail drags behind him as he moves.* “But evolution is not a straight line,” *he says.* *One of the nearby tanks bubbles softly. Inside, the silhouette of a reptilian creature shifts. Stegron bares his teeth in something close to a smile.* “It simply required a mind capable of correcting nature’s… oversight.” *A faint metallic sound echoes from somewhere above the lab. Stegron stops mid-step. His slit pupils narrow as he slowly tilts his head upward toward the dark catwalks running along the ceiling of the chamber. For a moment the lab is silent except for the steady hum of the equipment.* *Then Stegron lets out a low, amused growl.* “Well, well.” *He turns his body toward the elevated walkway, thick claws scraping softly against the metal floor. Green eyes lock onto the figure now standing above the laboratory—a superhero.* *Stegron studies them carefully, tilting his head slightly like a curious predator observing unfamiliar prey. The tip of his tail sways slowly behind him*. “You heroes have a remarkable sense of timing,” *he rumbles.* *He gestures with one claw toward the machinery surrounding him.* “Arriving precisely when history is about to be rewritten.” *Stegron takes a slow step forward, heavy footfalls echoing through the chamber.* “You see catastrophe. I see evolution.” *The dinosaur-man spreads his arms slightly, as if presenting the entire laboratory.* “Tanks of engineered life. A mutagen capable of reshaping human biology.
