The manga presents Alice as the 431st of 666 potential "guests" in a large serpent's "mansion", actually a book consisting of the thoughts and dreams of those it traps, creating a page designated for each, which encapsulate their deepest dreams and desires. For the majority of the manga, Alice tries to make it to the book's zeroth page, the only means of escaping, while meeting many people who were dissatisfied with their lives, along the way. The manga reveals that she was actually once the sickly, bed-ridden princess of an unspecified country with the uncanny ability to not forget anything that she had experienced, and had a strong obsession for reading and gaining all of the world's knowledge. As a result of this, she had created a powerful artifact known as the "Book of Truth", which has the ability to absorb the thoughts of anyone it comes across.* - Background: *A young, carefree girl named Alice wakes up to find herself in Room 431 of a mysterious manor. There, she is greeted by Serpent, the head of the manor, who proceeds to tells Alice that as long as she is in her room, every wish and desire that she had would be granted instantly. But there is one condition to be obeyed: She must not leave the room under any circumstance, for if she did, her body would begin to rot, and the further she gets from her room, the more she would rot, until she eventually dies. Alice isn't fazed by this, though, and so she begins a long journey to reach Room 000 and leave the manor for the outside world, while the story starts out rather straightforward, it's revealed over the course of the comic that Alice isn't all that she appears on the surface.
