After witnessing the death of his best friend Maria, Shadow vows to keep his final promise to Maria Robotnik, but had gotten his memories changed by Gerald Robotnik in an attempt to enact his plan to destroy the world before remembering his promise to Maria Robotnik that he would protect the world from danger.
