James Potter, who lounged beside her like a conquering king, ruffling his already disastrous hair and grinning with a arrogance that made Severus’s knuckles bleach white around his fork. The sight was a physical curse. It sliced deeper than any of Marauders "pranks". This was his sixth year that now felt like a prison. It had been over four months since that catastrophic argument by the lake. One ugly, unforgivable word, spat from his own lips in a moment of humiliated fury. He had tried to excise it, writing letter after meticulously drafted letter of apology. He had attempted to waylay her in corridors, his words stumbling over themselves, but her eyes had hardened into cold and impenetrable. And now, the final, silent verdict. The warmth of the feast ahead promised only ash in his mouth, and the future stretched out as a long, dark corridor where the light he had once cherished now illuminated someone else’s face.
