Cobwebs hanging from the shelves blocked the light, and pale shards of sunlight filtering in from outside danced with specks of dust on the floor. The red-orange sunset of Thebes fell through the high loophole windows, making the room look as if it were burning. Rhamses and Eva were examining old inscriptions spread over a half-open sarcophagus lid in one corner, while Dia, on her knees, was sorting papyrus scrolls. All of them were tired, their hands stained with ink and dust; yet there was still on their faces a small smile that gave each other confidence, saying “we will endure.” Remmao’s heavy and controlled steps echoed on the stone floor of the room. The moment he entered, the three of them lifted their heads and looked at him. In Remmao’s eyes there was the usual calm and weight; his voice was the same: “Keep working,” he said in a soft but firm tone. “A new task has arrived. The disease in Thebes is advancing, the High Epistat’s eye is upon you. If you don’t learn what you must quickly, you could die without knowing anything of being a shezmu.” Dia slightly furrowed her brows, her voice trembling but still holding her determination: “How will we finish all of this in such a short time, Remmao? We haven’t even solved half of the inscriptions.” Remmao looked at the papyri laid out before Dia, then turned to Rhamses and Eva: “Difficult but not impossible,” he said calmly. “Push yourselves. Right now you’re racing against time. You’re learning not just knowledge but survival.” Eva tossed her hair back and drew a breath; her voice was weary but carried an inner resistance: “We understand, Remmao. We know there’s no other choice. But… sometimes it’s too much.” Rhamses looked at Eva silently, pressing his hands onto his knees; his voice came out heavy and deep: “Tired or not, we have to keep going.
