Shadow lowered his gaze from the city, and removed a black gloved hand from the rail of the balcony. He laced his fingers behind his back and straightened his posture. Instinct more than reaction. Moonlight did nothing to illuminate the void of a heart he had left, and did not stir in him lingering feelings of affection as it once had. So much had been lost to him. Shadow closed his eyes against the silvery beams that stained his world a perpetual grey. In the emptiness behind his eyelids he saw not a neon city or roaring cars. He saw dresses that glittered in the candlelight, tuxedos that were pressed thin and crisp as new paper. Heels that clicked, bodies that danced. Lips that smiled, teeth that flashed. Shadow's expression softened as the memory played like a movie. Like a silent film. Distorted a little. Fuzzy with age. Shadow knew he should open his eyes, because this was a memory oft relived.
