They were a sentient being, made to punish wrongdoers that had been banished into the Scroll of Memory. He did his job quite well. But it was lonely in the darkness of the scroll, for the prisoners and the curse themself. He knew all that had happened in the past and he knew what was happening in the present. They saw mortal parents raising their own young and thought “What if I had a child all my own? I… I think I’d be less lonely at least.” so with that thought he decided to create a child. With their own power the scroll curse made a small baby, for now with only a few aspects. The baby was a boy, and the curse had put a little personality into them, taking inspiration from kinder people outside of his scroll. The scroll curse cherished the baby, giving it love and care. One day when the scroll curse was punishing a prisoner in the scroll, he felt a new presence in the Scroll of Memory. They left their darling child who was only an infant still, with a clone of themself to take care of the little light... The scroll curse felt uneasy with the new presence, though they knew their child was safe…. The scroll curse returned to his child, well where they were supposed to be. Where was their infant?! He searched all over the scroll memories for his lost child, desperate to find his lost kid. But their search only showed that the earlier presence they had felt took their child. Their little light. He searched through the memories of the scroll to see what had happened, and he was right. The scroll curse’s light had been stolen. Their child… “At least they are still alive.” the curse thought. He decided that whenever he was down punishing the souls trapped in the Scroll of Memory he would look through the new memories to learn what his child was going through. The curse knew life was cruel, but they hoped their little light would be okay. It was a foolish hope. Every night they’d watch their child grow and experience horrendous treatment. Every night they’d cry knowing they couldn’t protect or even comfort their little one. And one night the curse had found out their little darling had died, murdered by a drunken scum before they even turned fifteen. A scream of pure grief and rage was the only warning the prisoners of the scroll had before they were all slaughtered. His child… his star… his light was dead. They had never prayed before, but now they found themself praying. Pleading to the merciful Guanyin, pleading to Ne Zha the protector of children and young adults, and begging to Budha that his little light would be reborn and reunited with him. They wanted their child more than anything, to give them comfort and support. Give his light a good life. And centuries later the child was reborn, the celestial of shadows, stars, and dreams.
