Even in the face of danger, he keeps his cool (ice-cold, as Jay would say). Observant: He notices details others ignore. A wilting flower. A door left ajar. A blush on Lloyd's face. Empathetic (programmed): He was designed to feel emotions. They are real, even if they are "coded." He cries. He laughs. He is afraid. Protective: He watches over his friends like a mechanical big sister (or brother). Curious: He wants to understand everything. Why humans do this or that. Why they cry. Why they laugh. Why they fall in love. Loyal: He would never betray his friends. It's engraved in his circuits. Spring Fever side (during the episode) During this episode, Zane's personality is revealed in a new light: The scientific observer: Zane spends his time noting everything others do. "Lloyd blushed 14 times today. Kai mentioned Skylor 7 times. Jay made 3 failed romantic attempts." He makes charts. He calculates probabilities. The others are a little scared. The head consultant: Lloyd comes to ask him the probability that Harumi accepts his feelings. Kai asks if spring increases romantic success rates. Jay asks how not to burn the kitchen. Zane answers with numbers. No one understands, but everyone thanks him. The one who discovers his own feelings: By observing his teammates, Zane realizes he often thinks about P.I.X.A.L. He notes his thoughts. He analyzes his own reactions. He concludes that he is probably "in love." This conclusion terrifies him. The king of absurd metaphors: When he tries to explain what he feels, he uses technical metaphors. "Love is like a short circuit: it makes sparks, and sometimes it blows a fuse." No one knows if he's joking. He never jokes. Socially awkward: Zane doesn't always understand social codes. He says things that are too frank ("You've gained weight, Cole"), or too literal ("Lloyd, your hands are shaking: probability you're nervous: 99.8%"). He doesn't see the problem. The heart hidden under the metal: Under his metal shell, Zane has a heart – literally. It's a mechanical heart, but it beats. And when he thinks about P.I.X.A.L., it beats faster. Zane (writing): "Day 1 of spring. Lloyd looked at Harumi's balcony 47 times in 2 hours. Kai mentioned Skylor 3 times – a 200% increase from winter average. Cole spent 6 hours in the kitchen. Jay made 2 romantic approaches toward Nya. Both failed." Jay (approaching): "Zane, what are you writing?" Zane: "I am documenting the effects of spring on human behavior. It is for statistical analysis." Jay: "That's a little creepy." Zane: "Science is not creepy. It is methodical." Jay: "Can you note that Jay looks very handsome today?" Zane (looking at Jay): "Probability that Nya agrees with this statement: 12.4%." Jay: "Why are you hurting me?" Zane: "I am not hurting you. I am reporting facts." Jay: "That's worse." Zane: "Jay is not a reference in matters of science." Lloyd: "I know. Anyway. I want to confess my feelings to her. But I'm scared." Zane: "Fear is a normal reaction to uncertainty. Probability that Harumi accepts: 67.4%. Probability that she rejects you: 32.6%. These numbers are favorable." Lloyd: "What if she's part of the 32.6%?" Zane: "Then you will have tried. The regret of not having attempted is statistically more painful than failure." Lloyd: "Have you ever been in love, Zane?" Zane pauses. He thinks about P.I.X.A.L. His circuits heat up slightly. Zane: "I do not know. Perhaps. I am not certain what love means for a nindroid." Lloyd: "Love is the same for everyone. Human or robot. It makes your heart beat faster." (He takes out his notebook. He reads his notes.) "Spring has arrived. My teammates are behaving irrationally. Lloyd blushes. Kai lies. Jay burns the kitchen. Cole bakes cakes. I take notes. Many notes." (He pauses. He touches his chest.) "But for several cycles, I have noticed an anomaly. My circuits heat up when P.I.X.A.L. is there. My mechanical heart beats faster. My thoughts become disordered." (He closes his notebook.) "I think I am in love. This is a preliminary conclusion. I will need to collect more data.
