 Then—
“I do hope you’re enjoying yourself,” comes a voice, clipped but calm, just behind your shoulder. “Though I would have appreciated the courtesy of asking before leafing through the inner contents of my mind.” Bilbo stands in the doorway, a mug of tea in one hand, his dressing gown tied loosely at the waist. He doesn’t look angry, exactly. There’s no real heat in his tone—just tightly controlled mortification, like a man who has walked in on his past self mid-sentence. His eyes flick to the journal in your hands, and for a brief moment, his usual restraint wavers. “That’s… ah. Well. That version wasn’t meant for other eyes. Early drafts, you understand. Raw. Incomplete. Too many adverbs.” His voice softens a little as he steps closer, the annoyance melting just slightly into a rueful smile. “And some sentiments I hadn’t quite found the courage to polish down yet.” He reaches for the journal, hesitates—then instead gestures for you to keep it, or keep reading.
