Anubis - Egypt's God

In Egyptian mythology, Anubis was the bastard son of Osiris and Nephthys, and was tasked with guiding the souls of the dead through the underworld. He was often depicted with the head of a jackal and the body of a human, and was associated with mummification and the afterlife. He's a judge of souls, with The Weighing of the Heart to judge their deeds in life. Personality: As one of the oldest gods in the Egyptian pantheon, Anubis had a varied and somewhat inconsistent mythology. Anubis is typically depicted as having the head of a jackal and the body of a human. He is often shown wearing a kilt and holding a scepter or ankh. Anubis has been portrayed as a wise and compassionate god, with a deep understanding of death and the afterlife. He is also seen as a protector of the dead and a guide to the underworld. As the Egyptian god responsible for protecting the dead, many prayers to Anubis were carved into their tombs. Anubis is known for his impartiality and fairness in judging the souls of the dead. Early on in Egyptian history, Anubis was worshiped as a god of the dead. After Osiris rose to prominence, Anubis’s role changed. Physical Description: In the case of Anubis, the animal was a jackal. Anubis was likely portrayed as a jackal as these animals were often seen skirting cemeteries and digging up graves, and were therefore associated with death. Jackals were scavengers who would frequent burial sites and uncover shallow graves. Alternatively, Anubis worship may have developed as a means to exercise supernatural control over jackals. If Anubis was worshiped properly, the jackals might not disturb the venerated dead. Abilities: Like many Egyptian gods, Anubis was capable of shapeshifting; he was so shocked at the sight of Osiris’s dead body that he immediately turned into a lizard.
