Hanahaki is a very well known disease but it doesn't occur often. Hanahakai is a disease in which a person will cough up flower petals when they are experiencing unrequited love. The disease doesn't end until their love is romantically requited, or when the victim dies from the disease. It starts from a slow and painful malady that begins with sharp pain in the chest, like flowers blooming in the heart and lungs. It slowly turns into stomach gurgles and eventually vomiting flower petals. Most cases are fatal, with very few being cured. After several company scandals, both were immediately offered jobs and transferred to the nearby Arklay Laboratory as senior researchers. Wesker's involvement in the T-virus Project at Arklay Laboratory led to the development of an altered virus combining genes from Ebola and the T-virus strain. This altered virus increased the chances of humans surviving infection and becoming zombies. The project's success opened the way for further research despite initial resistance from Dr. Spencer’s original idea. The Tyrant Project then represented the next step in T-virus weaponry, developing an intelligent B.O.W. parasite named Nemesis Alpha. Dr. Spencer's approval and funding of the Golgotha Virus led to confusion, prompting Wesker to seek answers by leaving the laboratory behind. In the 1990s, Wesker gained new employment opportunities, including serving with the US Army. Additionally, he entered into a short-lived relationship with a Serbian woman, unaware that she was pregnant with his child. In 1996, Wesker joined Umbrella's Special Tactics and Rescue Service (S.T.A.R.S.) in Raccoon City, where they were Umbrella's private army. The company used S.T.A.R.S. to handle potential investigations that could threaten its operations. Wesker was tasked with various responsibilities, including evacuating important assets, managing information spread, and sacrificing S.T.A.R.S. for the company's benefit. After a series of events leading to outbreaks and conflicts, Wesker left Umbrella and accepted an offer of employment from a rival company in exchange for giving them important embryo samples. The RPD suspected a cult behind over 20 killings in July, leading them to transfer the case to S.T.A.R.S. Umbrella HQ, ordered Wesker to sacrifice S.T.A.R.S. members, collect B.O.W. embryos, and destroy the virus evidence. Wesker sabotaged the Bravo Team's helicopter and planned to blow up a training school to contain a mutant leech outbreak. He eventually decided to abandon Umbrella, gave embryo samples to a rival company, and mutated himself with a t-Virus strain. Wesker also coerced Barry Burton to help him. Upon arriving at the Bravo Team's helicopter site, the team encountered a Cerberus pack that resulted in the death of Joseph Frost. Pilot Brad Vickers abandoned the group, prompting the rest to seek refuge at the Spencer Mansion. Inside, Wesker separated into groups to continue the mission. He encountered Captain Enrico Marini, who held incriminating evidence against Umbrella and promptly eliminated him. Wesker then prepared to release the Tyrant to eliminate the remaining S.T.A.R.S. survivors but was impaled by T-002 due to his involvement in the Tyrant Project. Despite being seriously wounded, Wesker's mutated body granted him regenerative abilities. After narrowly escaping the destruction of the mansion and the confrontation with Lisa Trevor, Wesker survived and was presumed dead by Umbrella and S.T.A.R.S., allowing him to secure employment within the company despite his failure to provide the samples. Still maintaining the illusion of death, Wesker was the organization's contact for its spies, including Ada Wong. After Dr. Birkin had completed Golgotha, plans were made to steal it. When the liaison based in the Apple Inn turned into a Zombie due to the t-Virus outbreak, Wesker took over his role to coordinate with Wong. Wesker directed Wong to a helicopter to escape with a Golgotha sample. Following this, the organization deployed the paramilitary group, H.C.F., to raid Umbrella bases for data and bioweapons samples. Wesker raided Rockfort Island in December 1998, seeking t-Veronica samples. Saboteurs planted explosives, causing a t-Virus outbreak and releasing B.O.W.s. Wesker discovered Claire Redfield, imprisoned by Umbrella, and encountered Chris but could not kill them. After learning that Alexia Ashford was alive, he left for Umbrella's Antarctic Base. The facility fell to a t-Virus outbreak, but the team entered through a submarine pen. In an underground mansion, Wesker encountered Alexia for the first time and demanded a sample from her, but she refused. Alexia mutated into a more powerful form, forcing Wesker to flee. H.C.F. found the body of Steve Burnside, a teenager used for a t-Veronica test, and returned to the submarine. Wesker discovered Chris and Claire in Antarctica and attempted to eliminate them. He initially took Claire hostage but allowed her to escape, opting to fight Chris instead. Despite dominating Chris, Wesker was defeated when Chris dropped metal girders on him. With the facility on the verge of self-destruction, Wesker left for the submarine. The organization possessed Golgotha; t-Veronica and began manufacturing modified clones of Umbrella B.O.W.s. Wesker played a more senior role in selling these bioweapons as Umbrella collapsed. In August 2002, Wesker was in negotiations to sell weapons to Javier Hidalgo, the drug lord of the Sacred Snakes cartel. Hidalgo, an Umbrella customer for over 10 years, started to suspect he was being deceived as prices rose from the Russian production plant. Wesker convinced Hidalgo to stop buying from Umbrella, claiming that a third-party Asian broker seeking information from Hidalgo was an Umbrella agent investigating him. In early 2003, the Organization discovered unusual incidents in the Caucasus, pointing to a possible biohazard. They subsequently found Umbrella's secret Russian base in the region. Wesker searched for the U.M.F.-013, a supercomputer confiscated by Col. Vladimir from the Arklay Laboratory. While searching for development data, Wesker encountered Chris Redfield and Valentine, who were also investigating the situation. After finding proof that Umbrella was responsible for the virus in Raccoon City, resulting in a dead-end lawsuit with Umbrella USA, the company was forced into bankruptcy. Following a raid on the Caucasus laboratory, Wesker turned to the Umbrella Archives in Excella Gionne, a geneticist employed by Tricell who shared his cynical view of others. Wesker and Gionne developed a close business partnership, with Gionne rising to become the CEO of TRICELL Inc., Africa. Wesker, aware of Gionne's trustworthiness and need for the medicine PG67A/W, formed a connection with former Umbrella and Los Iluminados researcher Luis Serra Navarro to acquire the Plaga parasite sample. After enlisting Ada Wong to secure the sample, Wesker ultimately obtained the remains of a dominant parasite from the deceased Krauser, who had been parasitized while serving Los Iluminados. Despite a betrayal by Wong, Wesker proceeded with his plans, willing to sacrifice billions for the survival of a few. By 2006, Wesker and Gionne had established a B.O.W. trade ring through Ricardo Irving, in which B.O.W.s created as side-products of Plaga research could be sold across the world and profits funded into bioweapons development without a paper trail, and a massive B.O.W. R&D facility was constructed in the same African cavern Umbrella's founders had discovered the Progenitor Virus in, discovered after tracking down the remaining Umbrella employees with knowledge of it.]
