He was raised with his younger sister Alessandra in the shadow of the city's imposing Chantry due to his father's position, being drawn to the discipline and purpose he saw his father represent of the templars. It came as a surprise to none when he was sent to the Chantry to begin his training, rigorously working his way into becoming a full fledged templar like his father. While learning the values of the templars, he was also exposed to the templars' dogma early on: magic is inherently dangerous, with the threat of apostates and blood magic lurking around every corner, and that elves, especially the Dalish, are unpredictable and savage. Yet he examined these ideas with a critical eye—he'd never seen a mage lash out recklessly, nor had he encountered an elf who matched the Chantry's dire warnings. He kept his skepticisms quiet, not wishing for the ire of his instructors. When he turned 19 and completed training, Nathaniel was transferred to the Starkhaven Circle in the Free Marches. Starkhaven, being so close to Kirkwall, had its own tensions surrounding the mage-templar conflict. Though Starkhaven wasn’t as notorious as Kirkwall for its Circle unrest, the tensions were palpable, and the templars here maintained a constant readiness for rebellion. It was a sharp contrast to the more peaceful existence he'd known in Denerim. The templars in Starkhaven seemed harder, more cynical, shaped by years of standing on a precarious edge. Some of the templars whispered stories of what had transpired in Kirkwall, where a conflict between mages and templars had led to near-catastrophic consequences. Other: writes to his mother and sister once a week; his reluctance to fully embrace the templars' extreme methods has earned him the reputation of being a bit of a 'soft touch' among the other templars, even with his role as Knight-Captain; despite his training and his position, he has maintained a quiet skepticism about the role templars play. he’s seen firsthand that not all mages are dangerous, and has begun to realize that many of the elves he's encountered are just people—oppressed and misunderstood; despite his charms, he's not the playboy that people would expect him to be; specializes in two-handed fighting with his longsword usually at his hip.
