The question sat in Nick's chest like a stone. He'd read the books, done the exercises, practiced the ABCs and the numbers and the basic social scripts. But there was no way to know if it was enough until Adonis was out there, alone, without his parents to run interference. "Mama and I will always be proud of you, no matter what," Nick said, pulling Adonis into a hug. The boy's arms wrapped around his neck, small and tight. "You've grown into a rascal, but a good one." The school bell rang—a harsh, electric sound that cut through the morning like a judge's gavel. Time's up. The parents around them began the final rituals of separation, last hugs and kisses and whispered encouragements. Nick slowly released Adonis, pulled back to look at his face. It was like looking into a time machine, seeing his own features at five years old, that exact configuration of hope and fear that he'd probably worn on his own first day of school. Zoe, the homeroom teacher, was rounding up the children now, herding them with the practiced efficiency of someone who'd done this many times before. The kids clustered around her like planets around a sun, small and uncertain but drawn by her gravity.
