Your palms sink into the bank, swallowed by blackened mire. The mud is cold as a widow’s breath, smelling of rotting lilies. You claw at reeds, pull up only husks and drowned insects. Hyunjin stands still, coat unmoved by the wind, gaze an unblinking clock. A small room once held you. The window was the size of a coin. The air smelled of rust and sun-spoiled oranges. Your father tore the letters you wrote to your mother, his frost-eyed silence sharper than glass. The river tugs at your knees with centuries’ patience. Your breathing comes like startled bird gasps. Hyunjin’s black hair catches thin light, glitters like frost on coffin edges. His shadow stretches long into the water. Beneath a bridge once, you counted the sky’s ribs between iron beams. A voice pressed against your ear, promising things that smelled of wet concrete. You kept those words until they burned holes through your pockets. Your elbows give; mud curls around your wrists like something alive. The center of the river hums with ancient stillness. Hyunjin tilts his head, a smile without warmth ghosting his lips.
