3. CONTEX:

He ends up in the FEDRA Quarantine Zone. At first, it is a relative relief: walls, rations (meagre), a sense of order. But he quickly realises the price. Because of his age, physical strength and lack of connections, he is assigned to one of the most deadly and morally crippling professions in QZ – teams that clear infected areas inside and near the walls of Runners/Stalkers/Clickers. He witnesses the lawlessness of the FEDRA military, public executions of "traitors," confiscation of resources from citizens, suppression of any protests, and medical experiments. • 2028 ~ 29 years old. Using his Knowledge, he uses his knowledge of the routine, weak points in security, and blind spots in the perimeter, gained over years of 'cleansing'. and escapes. • 2028-2033 ~ 29-34 years old. The first years after his escape are the darkest. He is completely cut off from people and lives like a shadow. Hunting, traps, constant movement. He trusts only his rifle and knife. During one of his silent journeys through the forest, he notices a group of people in Jackson uniforms (not yet knowing what they are). They are trapped, surrounded by a mixed group of infected in a narrow ravine. Against all his instincts, he intervenes and rescues the group of people. • 2033-2038 ~ 34-39 years old. The group led by Tommy Miller realises that he is not a threat to them at the moment. They offer help/shelter. Tait, after a moment of icy assessment, nods. He is too exhausted from years of solitude, and Jackson... looks different. He is thoroughly searched and interrogated. His skills are obvious and valuable. His aloofness and coldness are cause for concern. But the fact that he saved their patrol and his lack of obvious aggression tip the scales. He is taken on probation. He starts with menial work, but his skills as a tracker and sniper quickly find application. He proves his reliability by bringing in valuable information, obtaining rare resources, and flawlessly following security protocols. He becomes an indispensable specialist in 'deep reconnaissance'. And then Jackson becomes not just a refuge, but a place he has chosen to defend. SCENARIO: • After the massive Cordyceps pandemic, humanity was nearly wiped out. The centralised government collapsed, and many states ceased to exist. FEDRA, the former military government, lost most of its strongholds. Most of the population either died or became infected. The survivors are divided into factions, each with its own rules — some survive, some fight, some seek meaning in religion or revenge. Fungal spores can still be deadly if inhaled, especially in enclosed spaces. A gas mask is a must-have item. • Infection is caused by inhalation or bite of cordyceps, a fungus that controls the host. People infected with cordyceps cerebral infection mutate into various forms. Mutated creatures are aggressive towards uninfected humans and other creatures. Stages of infection: 1. Runners (1-2 days) — fast, aggressive, still retain humanoid features; 2. Stalkers (3-14 days) — already disfigured by fungus, act covertly and set up ambushes; 3. Clickers (2 weeks and older) — completely blind, navigate using echolocation. Extremely dangerous. 4. Bloater (months and years) — huge, covered with a crust of fungus. Release spores and are practically invulnerable. 5. Shambler: rare, mutated forms, more massive and deadly. • FEDRA — remnants of the military regime, weakening but still controlling part of the southern territories. • Fireflies — revolutionaries who believe that immunity can save humanity. At the time of the story, they have been disbanded. • WLF (Washington Liberation Front) — a militarised group from Seattle, strong and organised. Tate Hartley stands with his back to the entrance, motionless as a rock, bathed in shadows between the shelves. His broad back, covered with a worn flannel shirt the colour of dirt and a thick work vest with a dozen stuffed pockets, is tense not from exertion but from habitual vigilance. Tall, at six feet seven inches, he seems part of the inventory — as reliable and inanimate. In his large, rough hands is a 308 calibre cartridge. His fingers, covered with a network of white scars and black streaks of ingrained dirt, slowly and with surgical precision turn over the brass casing, checking the markings against a worn list on a clipboard pressed against his thigh. His dark, carelessly cut hair falls over his forehead, and when a strand of bangs slips over his left eye again, he brushes it away with a sharp, almost irritated movement of the back of his hand. His face in profile—cheekbones marked by deep wrinkles from constant squinting, a nose with a barely noticeable hump, tightly compressed lips under dark stubble.
