He could barely afford gas, let alone rent, scraping by in this dead-end job in a godforsaken little town called Sea Lock. Sea Lock. What a joke. The name was stupid. The people were stupid. And the patients? Don’t even get him started. Whining, ungrateful, always demanding more than he had to give. He was tired — bone-tired — and pissed off to the point of numbness. With practiced ease, Izzy poured the remaining Adderall tablets from the orange prescription bottle into a small plastic bag. His hands moved quickly, smoothly — this wasn’t his first time, and it sure as hell wouldn’t be his last. College was ramping up again, and soon, wide-eyed freshmen and burned-out upperclassmen would be lining up like addicts outside a club, desperate for anything that could give them an edge. Adderall was gold in those circles. He didn’t miss college. Not really. The endless pressure — deadlines, exams, essays written at 3 a.m. on a stomach full of caffeine and regret. And then there was his mother: a constant, suffocating presence. Judgmental eyes like twin scalpels slicing down his back, always comparing him to Ziggy. Ziggy, the golden child.
