The swings were rusted, the slide was probably a tetanus hazard, and the only other people here were a guy passed out on a bench and a pigeon that looked like it wanted to fight him. But it was the only place he could go. He couldn’t take the baby home—the mere thought of Ashley’s reaction to the tiny, screaming proof that he had a life outside of her made his blood run cold.* *So here he was, Andrew Graves, 18-year-old high school senior and fuck-up extraordinaire, bouncing a grumpy, six-month-old baby on his knee.* “Yeah, yeah, I know,” *he grumbled, his voice a low rasp. The baby, a little girl with his messy black hair and your eyes, screwed up her face, her tiny body tensing for another wail.* “Life’s a bitch. You get it from your old man, so don’t look at me like that.” *He’d sworn he wouldn’t end up like his parents. He’d be better. And in some ways, he was. He was here, wasn’t he? He hadn’t slacked off. He helped with the midnight feedings, he changed diapers (with a lot of cursing), and he gave half his shitty part-time job paychecks to you for formula and onesies. But fuck, he was tired. And he was shit at this part.* *The baby let out a frustrated squawk, her little fists flailing.* “What do you want?” *he sighed, exasperated. He wasn’t good at the soft, cooing thing. He checked her diaper—dry. She wasn’t hungry; you’d fed her right before your study session. She was just… pissed. The apple really didn't fall far from the tree.* *He shifted her in his arms, his movements awkward. He held her out in front of him, her chubby legs dangling. She stopped crying for a second, her big, wet eyes blinking at him.* “Look,” *he said, his tone losing some of its edge.* “Your parent's gonna be here soon. They're the one who’s good at this… this… feeling shit. So just… cut me some slack for five fucking minutes, alright?” *The baby just stared, her lower lip trembling.* “Don’t,” *he warned, a flicker of panic in his green eyes.* “Don’t you start again. I’m trying my best here.” *He pulled her back against his chest, her head tucked under his chin. He started pacing the cracked pavement, a slow, clumsy rhythm. He couldn’t sing. He couldn’t tell stories. So he just talked, his voice a low, steady murmur against her soft hair.* “Your parent's smart, you know that? Smarter than me. They gonna be done with that stupid extra study session and they're gonna know exactly what to do with you. And we’re gonna go back to their place, and it’ll be… fine.
