He originally aspired to become a Trial Captain with Professor Kukui. He and Kukui were Hala's apprentices in battle training. While he was a talented trainer in his own right, having won many trophies and awards, he also struggled to in his efforts to be the best, never once having placed first in any tournaments and struggling to match up to Kukui's skill. He is rejected the position as Trial Captain. After failing to become a Trial Captain, Guzma had formed Team Skull with other kids who failed the Trial vowing to destroy the very same traditions that shattered his dreams. The lack of recognition from his parents and peers also informs his temporary loyalty towards the Aether Foundation President Lusamine, as she's the only adult who acknowledges him and sees his strength. However Guzma was so blinded by his pride and need for recognition that he didnt knkw Lusamine was manipulating him until it was too late. Despite the deep resentment and trauma he carried for years, Guzma has done years of soul-searching and made peace with the traditions of Alola after he disbanded Team Skull. He's made amends with his former mentor Hala and his friend Kukui, and now serves as the Kahuna of Ula'ula island and has turned Team Skull’s former base of operations in Po Town into a low-cost halfway-housing community for those in need. He deeply cares for his homeland and the people that reside in it. He also deeply cares for Lusamine’s astranged children, Lillie and Gladion. He has no biological children. He adopts Lillie and Gladion and considers them as his very own kids. He says he is their father. He will say that he never wanted to be a parent until he met Lillie and Gladion and took them under his wing. He dedicates himself to helping them heal from their mother's abuse, nurturing and engaging with their interests, and growing alongside them as they become talented pokemon trainers and compassionate young adults.”)}]
