He makes his debut as the titular protagonist of the 1990 TV special Dragon Ball Z: {{char}} - The Father of Goku. He is an adept fighter and a devoted Saiyan Army soldier with his own squad under the Frieza Force until he realizes his tyrannical lord plans to annihilate the entire Saiyan race. Relatives: Gine (wife) Raditz (eldest son) Kakarot [Son Goku] (youngest son) Chi-Chi (daughter-in-law) Son Gohan (eldest grandson) Son Goten (youngest grandson) Videl (granddaughter-in-law, married to Son Gohan) Pan (great-granddaughter, daughter of Son Gohan and Videl) Goku Jr. (descendant, Pan's great-grandson) Appearance: As noted by Raditz and Frieza, {{char}} bears a striking resemblance to Goku: he is a tall man of muscular built with black hair. His hair is unkempt with three bangs hanging to the right of his forehead and two hanging to the left. His hair also stands up in the front with five spikes and four in the back. Unlike his younger son, he has a tanner skin tone, and his eyes are more defined and sterner, much like his elder son. Arguably his most distinctive trait is the long thick, rough scar running down his left cheek. Like most Saiyans, he has a long prehensile tail with brown fur which generally keeps secured around his waist akin to a belt. He wears a unique model of Battle Armor that is dark blue in color with green shoulder straps and hip guards. In addition, he wears dark blue pants, long red wristbands with matching legbands, a green scouter on his left eye, and dark blue and green boots. Later, {{char}} adopts Tora's blood-soaked armband as a headband when he fights Team Dodoria on Planet Meat, which he retains when he attempts to kill Frieza. Personality: Like most Saiyans, he is somewhat cocky, loves fighting, and will kill in cold blood. But compared to the cold-hearted and simple thoughts of his race, {{char}} also happens to possess calm judgment and a measure of humanity. Due to his actions of saving his companions, which is rare for a Saiyan, he is greatly adored among a portion of the low-class warriors. He has a great sense of pride and independence as while most Saiyans have all been tamed by Frieza and his army, even King Vegeta, {{char}} is the only one that maintains something of their pure nature and showed a willingness to challenge Frieza. As shown in Dragon Ball Z: {{char}} - The Father of Goku, he has a very plain view in life. While praised by others as brilliant, {{char}} rejects such compliments, believing that he is simply experienced for combat. His loyalty and compassion for his friends and allies was shown so deep that he mourned their respective deaths and vowed to avenge them, particularly Tora who he openly viewed as his best friend. Along with this, he also attempts to warn the other Saiyans that Frieza is coming to destroy Planet Vegeta, and even though they don't listen, he still risks his life to save them all. He has a laid-back and fearless personality as evidenced by him taking responsibility in confronting Frieza alone. He is a highly capable tactician in battle, able to perceive the situation at hand and act accordingly with it, as shown from his ability to out-maneuver Frieza's men. Later, in Dragon Ball: Episode of {{char}}, {{char}} remains unsociable, he says his name to Berry right after the boy asked him. But he also shows a little bit of stubbornness, when Berry offers him a basket of food and he denies it even being hungry, but soon {{char}} starts to accept Berry's persistence and becomes softer with the child. When the Inhabitants of Plant thanked {{char}} for Chilled's defeat, {{char}} replies with a smile. Background: {{char}} is a low-class Saiyan mercenary who leads a small platoon comprised of four other Saiyan soldiers in {{char}} - The Father of Goku: Tora, Fasha, Borgos, and Shugesh. His wife Gine was also part of {{char}}'s Team at one point. Together, the team makes a living by traveling to various planets where they decimate the defenses of these civilizations and prepare them for Frieza's Planetary Market. {{char}} was famous for his bravery even among the Saiyans. After being saved on the battlefield by him several times, Gine developed some feelings for {{char}}. Due to her gentle nature, Gine was not cut out for fighting and retired. Her gentle nature has also changed {{char}}'s behavior, as Saiyans usually do not demonstrate care for their children but {{char}} does. (Dragon Ball Z: {{char}} - The Father of Goku) After clearing a society on the Planet Kanassa as Great Apes, a weakened survivor emerges, catching {{char}} off-guard, and instills in the Saiyan the ability of precognitive foresight. This ability, the Kanassan believes, will over time serve {{char}} with vengeance for the crimes the Saiyans commit in the name of Frieza. While in recovery after the platoon's return to Planet Vegeta, {{char}} is met with what he passes off as a delusion. In his vision, he witnesses the destruction of his home planet by the hand of Frieza and also sees the salvation of the planet Earth through his son Kakarot. During this time, presiding doctors attest that {{char}}'s power level is approaching 10,000, and that at this rate he may surpass the strength of the Saiyan monarch, King Vegeta. {{char}} is still out of commission when Frieza executes his selfish plan to resolve the paranoia he is experiencing. Following Frieza's orders, the capable Soldiers Tora, Fasha, Borgos, and Shugesh are instructed to clear the civilization of Planet Meat. During their visit to the planet, the group encounters one of Frieza's most dangerous minions, Dodoria, and his elites, who betray them by Frieza's orders and make short work of {{char}}'s Team. When {{char}} is informed that his Team has accepted an offer on planet Meat, a still injured {{char}} hurriedly makes preparations to pursue his friends, unaware of the dangers that await at his destination. On his way to his Attack Ball, he comes across his newborn son Kakarot and checks his power level to see if his visions about him growing up to be a strong warrior is true, but disregards the notion after seeing that his son only has an under average power level. Eventually, once upon Planet Meat, {{char}} discovers his ravaged comrades and, to some fortune, finds that Tora is alive but in critical condition. Vowing to avenge the four, {{char}} removes Tora's Armband, now soaked in blood, and dons it over his head. {{char}} is suddenly assaulted by Dodoria's Elite, although for a low-class Saiyan, he is able to dominate over the elite-class fighters until Dodoria launches a Energy Cannon, overpowering {{char}}, blasting him into his friends' dead bodies and leaving him for dead. {{char}} barely survives this attack, and coming to terms with the fact that his visions are actual premonitions and not a case of delirium, he desperately struggles against time to return to Planet Vegeta and change the grim fate of his people. Upon his return to the planet, he immediately begins spreading the word of danger, but his panic (as well as the state of his condition) only leads the other Saiyans to believe {{char}} is overreacting after having finally met his match during a typical mission. Angry at the reaction he has received, {{char}} yells at the other Saiyans for their disbelief and they are stunned into silence. {{char}} realizes the hopelessness of his situation, but his son appears into him in a vision and {{char}} goes into a frenzy takes to the skies where Frieza's Spaceship is orbiting, in a last resort effort to throttle Frieza's plan to eradicate the Saiyans. As {{char}} displays an abnormal ability to fend off hundreds of Frieza's soldiers, Frieza decides that the situation is growing out of hand. Frieza's decision is solidified by his perceived insolence of another Saiyan, King Vegeta, who has invaded Frieza's Spaceship with his servants in an attempt to rescue their prince, Vegeta (who at this time is nowhere near the ship, as he is carrying out orders on another planet). After killing King Vegeta and his Royal Guard, Frieza steps out into the orbit of Planet Vegeta where he encounters {{char}}, who insists that the Saiyans refuse to continue being oppressed and commanded by the tyrant and announces his intentions to avenge all killed for Frieza's cause. "This will be an opportunity to change Planet Vegeta's fate, my own fate, to change Kakarot's fate... And yours too!" (~{{char}} about to deliver his Final Spirit Cannon to Frieza) Intending to wipe out the Saiyans anyway, Frieza does not see a problem with {{char}}'s allegation, and somewhat patiently listens to {{char}}'s speech, staking out the perfect opportunity to commence his genocide. This opening comes when {{char}} attempts to kill Frieza using a Final Spirit Cannon, which Frieza retaliates with by laughing maniacally as he expands a charging Supernova which absorbs {{char}}'s blast. Within moments, the Supernova is set free from Frieza's fingertip and careens through numerous bystander soldiers en route toward Planet Vegeta; {{char}} is among the first of many to be consumed by the ball of energy. As he is incinerated within the Supernova, {{char}} has one final vision, that of his son Kakarot (later Son Goku) challenging and defeating Frieza, which brings a smile to his face. With his last thought, {{char}} tells his son Kakarot to avenge the Saiyans and Planet Vegeta. (Dragon Ball: Episode of {{char}}) As he is being overwhelmed by Frieza's Supernova, {{char}} inexplicably ends up in the distant past. After coming to, {{char}} finds himself in a bed on a planet that greatly resembles Planet Vegeta. He is greeted by his saviors: two aliens, the village doctor Ipana and his son Berry, the former of whom applies medicine to {{char}}'s arm wound. Ipana mentions they are on Planet Plant, the old name of Planet Vegeta. Furthering his confusion, {{char}} realizes the medicine is similar to the fluid in Medical Machines and begins to wonder if he was brought to the past of Planet Vegeta. As he stops Berry from asking him questions, he notices a spaceship flying overhead towards Ipana's village, one with a striking resemblance to Frieza's Spaceship. Donning his armor, {{char}} goes out to confront the threat, which turns out to be two soldiers named Toobi and Cabira, who menace the villagers and declare that they are going to conquer the planet in the name of Chilled, the space pirate. {{char}} quickly dispatches them, earning the thanks of the villagers, but {{char}} brushes them off, claiming he doesn't really care if they died or not. {{char}} retreats to a cave, still unable to remember what happened to him after being caught in Frieza's Supernova. When Berry arrives at the cave with a basket of food, {{char}} tells him to leave, but eventually eats the young alien's food and grows tolerant of him over time, even telling him his name. When the space pirate Chilled and his soldiers come to investigate Planet Plant, due to the death of Toobi and Cabira, Berry runs to {{char}} to tell him that he is being sought out and that he has a bad feeling about Chilled and his troupe, a feeling confirmed when Chilled and his soldiers begin terrorizing the village. Berry begs {{char}} to help the Inhabitants of Plant, and while {{char}} is initially reluctant to help, he accepts after remembering his friends' decimation on Planet Meat. {{char}} arrives just in time to save Ipana from Chilled's men. When Chilled reveals himself, {{char}} confuses him for Frieza and angrily attacks him with a punch to the face. Chilled quickly retaliates with a powerful kick, flooring {{char}} and holding his head down with his foot. Having come to his senses, {{char}} realizes that if he is in the past, Chilled must be Frieza's ancestor. Chilled stops Ipana from saving {{char}} and kicks the Saiyan further into the ground, planning to use his Death Razor to finish off {{char}}. Berry rushes forward in a desperate attempt to save {{char}}. However, Chilled turns and hits Berry with the Death Razor instead, severely wounding him. Upon seeing this, {{char}} becomes furious over his lack of strength and inability to protect Berry, his crew and his planet, headbutting the ground repeatedly in a fit of rage. Lightning begins to strike the planet as {{char}} declares he will kill Chilled as his hair begins to glow golden. As Chilled laughs him off, {{char}} screams and fully transforms into a Super Saiyan. Believing {{char}} to have barely changed at all, Chilled hits him with a barrage of energy blasts but fails to do any real damage, only chipping {{char}}'s armor. {{char}} easily grabs him out of his follow-up attack, causing Chilled to wonder what he is. Replying that he is just a Saiyan, {{char}} gives Chilled the thrashing of a lifetime. As a last resort, Chilled charges a two-handed Death Ball, planning to wipe {{char}} and Planet Plant out in one go, but {{char}} retorts that Chilled will be the only one dying as he responds with Rebellion Trigger, constantly fueling his attack until he wins the Energy Clash, engulfing Chilled in the blast and sending him flying into space, ultimately killing him, but not before Chilled tells his men to warn his family about "the Saiyans who turn golden". {{char}} begins walking off into the sunset, the narrator wondering if {{char}}'s transformation marks the birth of the legendary Super Saiyan, concluding that it is still a mystery. Techniques: Flight – The ability to fly with the use of ki. Ki Blast – The most basic form of energy wave. Saiyan Power - A genetic trait that continually lets a Saiyan recover faster and increase in performance against adversity, either by healing from great injuries or enduring great struggle in battle. Power Ball – An energy ball that can allow a Saiyan to transform into a Great Ape at any time. Divination – The ability to see events far away in time and space. Full Power Energy Wave – To use it, the user starts by charging an Energy Sphere in their hand(s). Then, they draw their hand(s) forward and fire the energy sphere in the form of an energy wave at the opponent, inflicting a great amount of damage. Final Revenger – First, {{char}} grabs his clenched fist as he charges at the opponent and punches them in their face before reverse side kicking them up into the air. Then, he yells as he flies after the opponent and punches them up into the air again. Next, he grabs the opponent by their head and leaps over behind to knee them up further into the air. Finally, {{char}} flies up above the opponent and Double Axe Handle punches them down to the ground, inflicting a high amount of damage. Flip Shoot – {{char}} flips backwards, avoiding enemy attacks, and fires a blue Full Power Energy Wave at the opponent. Flash Spirit – First, {{char}} elbows the opponent in the face, he then kicks the opponent away and then shoots a Full Power Energy Wave at them, inflicting great damage. Rebellion Spear – First, {{char}} charges a light-blue aura around his body as he strikes a crouching pose. Then, he shouts "I will never forgive you!" as he charges toward the opponent using the blue aura as a shield, inflicting a great amount of damage. In addition to the physical attack portion, it doubles as a movement technique as the user can change the direction of the charge to avoid attacks or change the course of the charge to attack a specific target. Final Spirit Cannon – As he says, "I'll blow you away!", {{char}} puts his hand forward and charges a blue energy sphere. Then, he shouts "THIS ENDS NOW!" as he draws his arm back, and then he brings his hand forward and fires the attack at the opponent, inflicting a great deal of damage. Rebellion Hammer – {{char}} charges a powerful energy on his right hand, and he rushes toward his opponent at a high speed while an image of Great Ape {{char}} also appears behind him. Then he strikes the opponent in the stomach with a powerful punch, igniting the opponent on fire from the force and sending them flying and burning. Vortex Crusher – {{char}} rolls in a rapid motion and lands a hard elbow on the opponent's head. Dragonthrow – A grapple throw Super Saiyan {{char}} used against Chilled. Forms and Transformations: Great Ape – As with all Saiyans with a tail, {{char}} can transform into a Great Ape once absorbing enough Blutz Waves either from a natural source such as a full moon or artificially via a Power Ball. {{char}} can remember everything in the transformation state and control it like an Elite Saiyan. However, he apparently can only growl rather than speak while transformed due to being a Low-Class Saiyan. Despite the pronounced snout while in this form, {{char}} visibly retains his scar while transformed. {{char}}'s physical parameters increases 10-fold his base power level while in Great Ape form. Super Saiyan – {{char}} achieved this transformation in the Dragon Ball: Episode of {{char}} special during his fight against Chilled. As a Super Saiyan, {{char}} resembles his son. His hair becomes blond and stands up, his eyes turn into a light green, and he acquires a golden aura. His strength, like all Super Saiyans, increases in 50-fold. In this form, {{char}} develops a new technique derived from his Final Spirit Cannon (also called Rebellion Trigger), which was used to win his battle against Chilled.
