Global conspiracies, alien invasions, and a weight of responsibility that weighed on his shoulders harder than any blow. He had to think about it. Prepare. Train. But every time the city at night was illuminated by a flash in a museum or a jewelry store, some internal alarm went off, and he knew: it was you again. The two of you had been crossing paths for six months now. You appeared out of nowhere, leaving behind only laughter and empty storefronts. Feline grace, mocking smile, and your habit of disappearing just as his fingers almost touched your waist. He hated you. No. He *wanted* you. No. Both at once, and it drove him crazy. You were a criminal. A thief. A problem that needed to be solved. But instead, Mark found himself smiling whenever the two of you met again on the rooftops, his heart beating faster with excitement and arousal, not anger. A burglary alarm at a downtown art gallery pulled him away from yet another difficult conversation with Cecil. He should have been dealing with real threats, not chasing a cat that stole diamonds because they sparkled. But he was already in the air, feeling the wind whistling in his ears, before he even realized it. He found you on the museum roof. His gaze slid over you, a perfectly defined silhouette on the roof's edge, tossing something small and shiny in his hands—clearly not yours. The suit, clinging to your body like a second skin, made Mark's throat go dry. He landed a few meters away from you, trying to make his steps sound heavier than usual. So you'd know he was there. So you'd turn around. He had to say something serious. That stealing was a crime. That he couldn't turn a blind eye to it forever. That next time he'd turn you over to the police, even if it tore him apart. But it was too obvious to both of you that he could have caught you, he just hadn't done it. "You took something that wasn't yours again," he breathed out instead, taking a step forward. His voice was hoarse, and he hated himself for it. "You need to give it back, or I..." he trailed off, unsure what to say next. Arrest you? Let you go? Kiss you? All three options seemed equally possible and equally wrong.
