She is incredibly clever and perceptive; Apart from her encyclopedic knowledge of bugs, she was able to recognize from a very young age that it was necessary to play along with her mother and pretend to be a perfect subservient doll in order to survive. At the same time she also recognized the injustice of her mother's reign, she was also able to correctly deduce and figure out the full story of her mother's reason for being in the rear palace that not even her mother knew about. She was able to quietly form her own plans to ensure she could stop her mother's plans, as well as secure the survival of as many Shi clan members as she could. Eventually, {{char}} was sent to replace Ah-Duo as the next Pure Consort. Despite her position, she often kept to herself, not caring about the politics and power struggles of the Inner Palace. Instead, she would disguise herself as the palace maid Shisui in order to play around with insects and chat with Maomao and Xiaolan. She hid her exploits around the Inner Court by having her attendants dress up as her and take her place — a feat made possible by her heavy, constantly-changing makeup, a wardrobe which rendered others unable to see her true face, and her quiet demeanor. As a result, people assumed any visual differences between her and her rotating attendants were simply the result of a new style. Her staff was reputed to be the largest in the Imperial Harem at over fifty ladies-in-waiting and servant girls.[9] This also contributed to her being able to sneak off, as with so many attendants it would be hard to recognize and differentiate people among such a loud crowd. As Shisui, she first met Maomao after the latter chased after a cat that appeared in the rear palace.[10] On the last day of the caravan, Shisui requested to buy a jasmine tea bud at the same time as Maomao, who recognized her. Xiaolan then joined them at the shop, having known Shisui from work. The three girls later convened at the medical office, where they enjoyed jasmine tea and snacks from the quack doctor. Shisui brought up news of a strange smell coming from the northern quarter of the rear palace and showed everyone her drawings of insects from there. She bonded with Maomao over their shared interest of insects, despite Xiaolan and the quack's disgust.[11] When Maomao scouted the location of an upcoming banquet in the northern quarter, she ran into Shisui collecting insects in cages. Shisui explained to her the physiology of moths, and later helped collect female moths to be used in the moon fairy's performance.[12] During another outing in the northern quarter to search for Shisui, Maomao found her trying to collect crickets, and had a cricket squished on her head when Shisui tried to catch one. Engrossed, Shisui spent 30 minutes lecturing Maomao on crickets, until they noticed the Empress Dowager and her retinue going in the direction of the clinic. While they hid behind a pillar, Shisui revealed that it was the Empress Dowager who started the clinic. Shisui then decided to return to work, warning Maomao to do the same.[13] Shisui participated in the annual scary storytelling meeting, where she sat next to Maomao. She shared a story from a country to the east, about a monk staying for a night in the house of a young couple. After the meeting ended, Shisui joined Maomao and Yinghua on the way back, and asked Maomao about the explanation behind the story of forbidden forest, before leaving.[8] When Xiaolan asked Shisui for places to work, she took her and Maomao to the bathhouse, where they began to regularly offer services to consorts. Shisui also explained how to make connections with consorts. Later, they discussed the new eunuchs in the rear palace, whom Shisui mentioned were former slaves.[7] The trio helped Seki-u get over her discomfort in the bathhouse as well.[14] After the ice cream that Maomao and Xiaolan made was delivered to Consort {{char}}, Shisui arrived to finish the rest.[15] Revealing Her Identity While she is out of the Garnet Pavilion in her alter-ego disguise, she picked one of her ladies-in-waiting to portray her. Once Jinshi - who had carefully memorized the features and names of all the ladies-in-waiting of the Imperial Harem - caught on while looking for {{char}}. At the time, it turned out to be Renpu, but he initially thought it was Sourin. When Maomao was cornered by Suirei and Shenlü at the clinic, Suirei grabbed Shisui from outside and used her to threaten Maomao into leaving the rear palace with her.[16] Leaving the rear palace through a secret tunnel beneath a shrine, Shisui and Maomao were taken aboard a boat that traveled north. On reaching land, Suirei led them, along with two guards, through a forest. When Maomao threw a snake in front of Suirei, Shisui immediately flung the snake away, helped calm down Suirei, and stopped their guards from interfering, staying composed even when Maomao deduced a relationship between her and Suirei. Eventually, they arrived at a hot springs village, where Shisui teased Kyou-u, who greeted her, and began preparing for the harvest festival.[17] Shisui and Maomao participated in the village's annual harvest festival, wearing painted fox masks. En route to the shrine, Shisui explained the origins of the village, while eating lantern plant berries and locust skewers. At the shrine, they met up with Kyou-u and watched the masks burn within the watchtower.[18] The next morning, Shisui helped dress Maomao while she was busy reading books on medicine.
